Okay then, the first Spider-Man comic? He is voted to be the world's most well known and most liked superhero.

Finding an old lady that didn't know what she had by sheer dumb luck doesn't change the fact that there are very VERY few copies of Action Comics 1 around.

Anything pre-WW2 is going to be very valuable.  Many comics from that era were recycled (they were newsprint, after all).  Then in the early 50s, we had parents burning comics as a result of the ole Freddy Wortham's book.

That was probably sheer luck (if you really did find it there). If so, there probably wasn't another place you could find that thousands of miles from there. Maybe even more.

Yeah, that comic is Overstreet listed at $485,000.  It is listed as the most rare and valuable comic book in the world.

I would say platinum age comics would be the rarest. It's not easy finding a comic from 1919.

@G Bird:
Hi, I was looking for something on the Internet and came across your question; it made me think.  And since you already have some answers I'm going to let you have mine. I believe that the rarest comic would depend on a number of factors, age, low print run, value to the market etc.  Whiz comics #1 is a scarce ash can featuring Captain Thunder, called Captain Marvel in issue 2.  Although it's scarce it is not hugely expensive like say Detective Comics #27.  However, there are a few of these and if you have enough money you could buy one eventually.  So what we need is expensive and scarce, like say Action Comics number 1.  I know what you are thinking, hugely expensive, but there are a few and that would be true.  Even so, what if there were a variant copy of Action Comics #1 and only one copy is known to exist?  Wouldn't that be the rarest comic in the world?  25 years ago I was at a convention in London, England and one of the dealers had a near mint copy (pence copy) of Action Comics #1.  I believed him when he said it was the only pence instead of cents copy.  So in my opinion, for what it's worth that is the rarest comic in the world.  Where it is now I have no idea, but it does exist.  Kind regards, Adam.

I'm going with either Action Comics #1 or Marvel Comics #1 (back when it was still Timely Comics)

Do you mean rarity as in scarcity? Meaning there are very few copies in the world?
For example something can be rare but not worth a lot of money compared to a popular less rare comic. The early Pulp magazines with Doc Savage and the Shadow are very rare so are many of the British Penny Dreadfuls but they don't have the same collecting power as the big names like Batman, Spider-Man, etc

The big brands are Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, Namor, Cap America and the original Torch

 Cameos in comics often add to the price, first appearance off Thor, first appearance of Green Lantern and first celebrities and Presidents like modern have been predominantly adding Nixon or Kennedy or Obama in a comic sometimes increased its value, for example the Mohammed Ali vs Superman is worth a big sum. There are other gimmicks  "limited editions", "cover variants" etc etc

The big 2 are Batman and Superman from Dectective Comics and Action comics, they have gone back and forth over the years over which issues are more valuable. Last I heard Batman was in the lead, a copy of Detective Comics #27 fetched $1.075 Million Dollars, a record-setting sale which beats the most expensive Superman comic

The rarest, not the most valuable. From 1940 7-11 copies known to exist Possibly never published NYC release only.
Try to find an interior scan! Can't be done.

I'm not sure but I think there were comics before the 1900's but they weren't called comics. If anyone could find out what they were called then that'd be great. They were more like short little books with no pictures but ran in series.

Motion Pictures Funnies Weekly is definitely one of the rarest comics ever. It was the first appearance of Namor but it was never actually published. Only a few samples copies, around 5 or 6 I think, were ever printed.

Yeah that looks like something from back then too. lol I wonder how much that comic would go for if anyones got it.

An issue in so/so condition was put up for auction in 2010. It sold for 1.5 million. However, recently (I believe), another one has/is going up for auction and it's in (near) mint condition. Experts are estimating that it can go for up to 2 million.
