After the swap happens, they have to take over all the responsibilities of the costumed life of the other; including team responsibilities.

They both have their standard costumes and are in character. Batman has his utility belt with his normal gear inside it, and a good supply of baterangs, but no Batmobile or anything like that. Spidey has his web shooters, and a month’s worth of fluid. No prep before the swap, and no previous knowledge of the other universe.

All the villains stay in their home universes, and go after the swapped hero as if he was the one they normally would go after. For example: If the Sinister Six was planning an attack on Spider-Man, they now would attack Batman in his place.

How would the characters have changed by the end of the year? How would of the rouges changed while fighting the other hero? How would the swap affect the teams the characters are a part of, and their respective universes?

Gotham's villains would receive a good stomping aside from a few (ie: Clayface and Poison Ivy). So the rogues would either have to get stronger or give up.

Batman would get gutted the instant he ended up in a random encounter with one of Spidey's mid-tier villains (ie: Scorpion, Lizard etc..). The villians would run rampent through the city until the Avengers or somebody noticed and took care of it.

Spider-Man beats almost every single of his foes via his intellect. His fights rarely come down to who is stronger or faster.

I don't really think Batman would have as big a problem as you think. Likewise, although Peter could 1 shot Joker in a fight, he would not handle Joker murdering one of his friends of family members very well. He basically self destructed after Aunt May got shot...

@fallschirmjager: He relies on intellect because his foes are normally physically superior to him or equal. With Batman's foes there is no such problem.

I never said it wouldn't be emotionally traumatic but in the grand scheme of things as Spider-man as no emotional connection to Batman's villians it wouldn't be out of the realms of possiblity that once he see's the worst of what Gotham has to offer he's goes all back in black and ends up maiming or even crippiling some of the worst ones.

The likelyhood of Batman ending up in a random encounter with someone he has no knowledge of and who is physically superior to him is very very high. He's not walking away from a fight with Lizard, Scorpion or god forbid Morlun alive.

Everyone does realize that Peter has to take Batman's place in the Justice League too, right? How do you think things would go there? Same with Batman in the Avengers.

Pretty much concur. Batman has a lot of experience taking down metahumans like Killer Croc and Clayface using both brains and brawn... so I would think planning for the likes of Lizard and Scorpion shouldn't be too different.

Also, do the villains of each world know the abilities and mentality of the "replacement" hero? Are we to assume that they do...? If they do, then I'm fairly sure Batman's villains aren't going to approach Spidey they way they would Bats. If they know Spidey is much faster and stronger than Bats, guys like Joker, Riddler, and Scarecrow are going to plan things out much differently so they don't get clobbered the second they step into the same room with him.

Spider-Man would have Gotham cleaned up while I think Batman would end up just being another Masked vigilante. I think Spider-man brings something far different to Gotham than what Bats brings to New York.

I think they both bring something far different. I also feel like Spider-man might have trouble with the psychological games that many of Batman's villains play (Joker, Riddler, Scarecrow, etc).

Interesting choices of villains to bring up. You do know they're actually two of Spidey's more powerful rogues? You speak of them as if they are lower end B-listers.

Spidey would thrive and Gotham gets safer. Physically he wouldn't be challenged by a large majority of the villains. And psychologically, Parker is stronger than people give him credit for. His spider-sense would help him overcome his lack of detective skills. I could see this happening (for example)- a bank gets robbed. Batman uses the clues and find out who did it. Spider-Man is swinging around nearby and stops the robbery in progress.

Batman ... he'd struggle greatly but he wouldn't die. I have a hard time seeing him going toe to toe with many of Spidey's enemies. Basically, and this is no diss on either character... he'd be Moon Knight taking on Spider-Man's rogues. He'd be fighting uphill in nearly every encounter. And the symbiotes, the goblins and villain groups could be career ending matchups for the Batman.

Batman isn't able to swing/glide in to stop regular old "robberies in progress"? How does Pete's spider sense equate to detective skills? As far as I know, those are two different abilities entirely.

Batman is pretty far above Moon Knight in just about every respect.

I see both doing fairly well. Spidey is smart enough and tough enough to deal with most of Gotham's threats. Batman may get banged up his first couple of nights but he'll adapt and begin planning more carefully. He wouldn't of lasted this long being a hero not knowing how to handle those tougher than himself.

@omnicrono: Spider-Sense and detective abilities are two different skills. What I was trying to say is that Spidey tends to be proactive and actually do routes around the city, waiting for his spidey sense to tingle and thus stop a crime in progress. No question that Batman can and has done similar things. But I usually see Batman coming in after in the fact and then using his detective skills, figuring it out and tracking the bad guys down. I think Gotham would benefit from a more immediate response that Spidey brings.

As for ranking Bats ahead of MK... ok. My point remains the same. =)

Yes, Batman definitely does more detective work. And yes, he's just as proactive in stopping crimes in progress around the city as well, basically doing everything that Spidey does and then some. Spidey uses web to swing around, Batman uses grapnel, gliding, batmobile, batboat and even batplane. Bats also has access to the security camera network around Gotham, is tapped into all police frequencies and security systems, etc. I can think of no actual advantage that Spidey would have in terms of proactively finding and staying ahead of crimes in progress... besides maybe being able to swing from point A to point B a little faster than Batman can swing (but even then, Batman has all those other options if swinging around isn't quick enough).

Again, spider sense is of no help in that regard. It is only an early warning system if he is under attack.

Actually spider-sense allows him to detect threats even before they occur, it also allows him to see the next move his opponent will make and finally it also allows him to hunt/track down criminals:

I feel like Batman would struggle at first, but I think with the help of Iron Man lending him some tech, he'll be able to adapt just fine to his current situation. While Peter on the other hand will probably fair much better, but as it goes on it will most likely change him, and take a toll on him psychologically. Either way, I'm kind of upset that we can't make this happen!! Darn you OP for putting this in my head!!

Mmm... I think your reaching a bit with that scan. Yes, it allows him to detect danger before it occurs, but typically danger that is in his immediate vicinity, and generally not over long distances unless it's a nuke getting dropped on the city or something... something that would be a real danger to himself as well. That's why his spider sense is not constantly going off. Notice, the bad guy in the scan is in the same room with him (therefore there's a real danger to himself as well, not just the people around him.) So, yeah... I guess if we want to split hairs then I suppose you could say it provides him with an innate tracking ability of sorts... albeit a very, very limited one.

Nevertheless, I will retract my statement. The spider sense isn't of zero use in that regard, I suppose.

In regards to how well they do on each others teams... once again, I think Spidey would be fine. He has a great attitude, brings a unique powerset and is surprisingly a good team player. Assuming that Batman's paranoia doesn't let him quit a team he hasn't vetted yet, I think he'd do fine too. Essentially, he'd be playing the role of the Black Panther.

Without Wayne resources, Batcave and Bat family Bruce loses a step on his prep and ability to slap stuff together as quickly. But he's Batman, so he'll work something out. Meanwhile Peter has been building his web fluid since high school, so he's set.

I think Spider-Man would stomp most of Batman's rogues pretty handedly and they'd leave Gotham and look for easier pickings. I'm not sure about Spidey's rogue gallery versus the Bat, because they wouldn't be scared of him (no history of being the city's dark knight) and for the most part, they're more powerful than him.

By the end of the year, Peter would probably a little more cynical and maybe even a little scarred. Joker's head games and all that jazz. But Peter won't take it as personally as Batman does, so he'll be fine. Batman... eh... I don't know. Part of me thinks he stands a better than average chance of getting broken (crippled) by a symbiote or a goblin, so he comes home and hands off the reins to a former Robin.

Just my two cents. =)

Batman builds a stronger Insider that's more energy efficient with the help of Stark tech. Maybe he even rebuilds Wayne Int. and gives all the dumb Spidey villains low level jobs at the company after he makes Ravencroft a functional rehab facility.

Then he and Black Cat do what he and Catwoman did...you know.sex and stuff.

With no Batcave or resources, Batman will not amount to anything special, basically being in another world where no one knows him. He will probably be a better Moon Knight and that is all. As for any Avengers teams, he could probably help a smaller team but again, with no money and resources, he nerfed.

Spider Man will be fine aside from Joker only if he can plan first or Clayface in a first encounter.. However. Spider Man is of absolutely non use on the Justice League. What does he have that they could need?

But I thought the idea was to speculate how the characters would do against the opponent's rogue gallery, and not other (worse) villains who may show up to take them down a peg.

@ultrastarkiller: I don't think Spider-Man plays their games. He doesn't have an emotional need to stop them, like Batman does. Without a sense of history, for Peter, they are just two crazy dudes.

Having said that, Peter is a good problem solver. He's brilliant actually and his spider-sense has tons of utility. He'll catch the bad guys more often than not.

Peter would do fine, even against rogues like Clayface or Ivy he's shown that he's more than smart enough to prep a way to beat them even if he couldn't just physically plow through them. Not that physicals are his method of winning anyway, it's being smart and fighting smart. I honestly see no reason why he wouldn't handle Joker just as well as Bats. Riddler might cause initial issues, because Peter would need to change how he thinks, but we've seen him do that before against foes who evolve strategies like Ock. The dialogue between Peter and Joker or Peter and Riddler would be incredible to read if written well though.

Bruce, if he got a chance to set up shop, could do well against some of Spidey's lower end rogues like Chameleon or Kingpin. However even with prep he'd need to always be prepped because even a jobber like Rhino could ruin his weekend very fast. Bruce might end up going the Tony Stark route after a month and build himself a "better Batman suit" so he can contend with some of the higher end ones like Scorpion, Electro, Goblin, or hell the Lizard. If Bruce can survive the first few weeks, I could see him doing fine as well...provided he builds a suit.

The point being, both could solve each other's problems. They may not go about it the same way, but the end result should be the same. Admittedly, I see Bruce having a harder time and his chance of fatality is much higher and certain Spidey villains I think would be too much unless he really cheeses the system and builds an Iron Man level suit.

@granitesoldier: Total 100% agreement.

Can you imagine if this really did happen and the characters did swap for 1 year/12 issues? Wow. Think about what that could do for comics. Comic titles for both characters would be flying off of the racks at a record pace. It would be a win-win for both DC & Marvel. I know I'd be buying. =)

I think people are really sleeping on peter when they say what would he have to offer the JL. Dude may not be as smart as Bruce but he is still damn smart and one of the most clever in the heat of battle thinkers.

case in point Spiderman tricks Phoenix force Colossus/Magik into fighting each other. So imo theres nothing stopping spidey to fit into a tactical role with the JL

@crossfire14: If Spidey needs to be that smart to keep up with the JL, he will be. That's how Batman got where he is, intellect-wise.

Batman~Bruce Wayne merges WayneTech with Stark Industries and the two team up to form an Avengers style team of tech supers to clean up New York. He forms a relationship with Elektra and makes a rival out of Bullseye and Norman Osborne.

Spider-Man~Probably become something of a hero for Gotham, more welcomed than Bats if only cause he has a better demeanor. Would probably join the Teen Titans. He forms a relationship with Poison Ivy or maybe Harley Quinn (You knew it was coming) and makes rivals out of Slade and Scarecrow.

Hmm.. This is interesting, here's my take. Bat's rouges equal a more psychological impute while Spidey's rouges obviously equal a more physical impute. It's not going to be as easy as everyone thinks for Spidey though in regards to the psychological aspect. You make the argument that Spidey has no mental attachment to any of these villains because he just met them but you guys are forgetting this all last for a year. With repeated encounters, it's bound to happen but there are the villains that Spidey will have no problem with i.e Mr Freeze, Clayface (I defiantly see him wining that with prep), Penguin etc. but then there are the Psychos. Joker, Zasz, Riddler, Two Face etc. then there art the tacticians i.e. Ra's Al Ghul, Bane, etc. Spiderman is not breezing through this but I see them both eventually owning each others citys. I also see Bruce and Tony possibly becoming friends with there shared intellect. If Tony shares some of his wealth and feasible research then Bruce's chances are a lot higher. All in all this will be a very interesting year.

Bruce gets crippled by Spidey's Rogues and Peter mops up Gotham with the exception of maybe The Joker who he may end up beating to death if he attacks his loved ones.

So they have to rebuild their lives, no access to their money and buisnesses?

I think this favors Spider-man a bit, as he's used to being broke, and I think it won't take long for other Gotham heroes to make contact when he shows up and Bruce disappears, and he'll wind up with at least limited access to Batman's resources.

Batman, on the other hand, might be contacted by the Avengers (probably Mighty), or a few of the NYC heroes (Daredevil, Iron Fist, etc.). But despite Peter having his own company, he doesn't have an 'Alfred' to hold the reigns while he's gone.

Spider-Man doesn't really have the attachments for Joker to beat to death. But then again, Batman doesn't have them for Goblin to throw off a bridge.

I see Spider-Man back in a black costume as well... or going the other way and re-donning his Prodigy costume in this reality that idolizes brightly colored heroes.

I see Batman upgrading his gear by taking down a goblin and swiping his gear. New paint job and a little sewing, and he has a Bat Glider, Bat bombs, and, erm, razor bats.
