I've read New 52 Batman and Superman comics. I want to start reading somewhere before New 52, but don't know where to start reading without starting at the very beginning. I'm mostly interested in Batman's and Superman's comics, but wouldn't mind others.

Green Lantern after brightest day Geoff Johns writing is fantastic and you probably enjoy it beacuse it continues in the New 52 after the War of the Green Lanterns

Try Batman or Superman's DC Showcase Presents series. It's a good way to pick up a huge chunk of older comics cheap with the only draw back being that they are black and white reprints.

Go to the wiki pages for the characters and click on "recommended reading." There is a lot of useful information there, with Batman and Superman having more information that a lot of them! Hope that helps. :-)

@acro808: Hey, welcome to Comic Vine! :)

Like @dabee said the recommended reading section is very helpful.

Here's a few links for the Batman and Superman starter guides.
