I honestly think some of his works are pretty good. But, sometimes his stories are also cheesy and he can act like a douche (see the thread "Is Brian Michael Bendis An Emotional Wreck?).
What Do You Think Of Brian Michael Bendis?
A lot of people think he's a dick...personally, I liked his daredevil run with maleev, however, I haven't read anything else he's done
Probably not as bad as Lobdell *gasp* I have a new thread idea...
His DD run is great, but he's spent the last 4 years butchering the X-Men/Guardians franchises and I hate him for it.
Bendis can write BUT... His taken way too much titles under his care over the last few years and the quality has suffered a lot from it. I think his done his best work in solo and limited run titles where he has the time to plan things properly. His team books such as he young X-men and GOTG V.3 have been mediocre at best and cringe worthy at their lowest.
I know that no writer is capable of churning out masterpieces all the time year after year but he really needs to get back to a-list-lvl, stop writing inconsistent crappy stories and just give up on writing team books which clearly aren't at his comfort zone.
Marvel now stuff have been crap but his daredevil and ultimate Spider-Man is great his avenger stuff is up and down for me
He is a really good writer who receives a lot of undeserved hate, he has done some mediocre stories but most of the things he writes are really good.
@thor_parker82: Well the problem hasn't really been with single stories but with the fact there's been precious little actual story line & character development in GOTG & All new X-men books as a whole. "Slice of our lives"-stories are okay every once in awhile and as a set-up to new story arches but when Bendis wrote them almost exclusively in that style for more than two years... A lot of readers started to feel frustrated with the lack of 'story progress'.
@dextersinister: Oh how I'd wish you to be wrong in your assessment Dex... but you aren't. *sigh*
I like him and his writing. He's been critically acclaimed for having novel ideas for stories. His ideas for stories are often pretty good but perhaps because of his tight schedule the story don't end very well.
He is still one of my preferred writers. Through from what I understand, people on comicvine hate him because he is inconsistent in regards to characters power level. That doesn't really bother me to be honest.
@claymore1998: it's not just that; like I've iterated earlier. He's also internally inconsistent with the characters he writes at times, which is pretty bad form IMO.
Another Bendis perennial from the last few years is the 'aborted story-line'-syndrome, it was especially virulent in his GOTG-run.
@sinikettu: fair enough, though what do you mean internally inconsistent. Did you mean in terms of motivations or simply not following a prescribed cannon.
A possible reason people feel this way from my understanding is people don't like what Bendis does with a character. You have to understand one of the reasons he is acclaimed is because of the witty banters he writes. That's his strength.
He is also known for shock endings, where he would normally not drag out the ending to a villains story as smoothly.
But that's just his nature of writing. Some people will like it some won't. On comic vine many people don't like him but when you look at wider comic audiences they actually like him.
He is one of the highest paid writer for a reason.
Got nothing against him as such, the stories I've read from him have been decent and I dont get the immense hatred from fans he generates. In fact, I'd rather have him than Johns at DC.
But that said, the latest gimmick of litterally crowbaring a kind of political correctness agenda into Marvel on a broad level (like having Miles Morales as Spiderman with Peter nowhere in sight). I can understand why the jimmies are rustling.
His DD and Ultimate Spider-man Pre-Miles runs are beast. Everything else? Meh.
@claymore1998: Internally as in; the characters felt like they were on medication at times also the way their powers fluctuate up & down. I can usually let small slips of continuity and inconsistency slide but when even the story is just mediocre... They get annoyingly blatant.
It's not that I don't like Bendis' banter but he needs to step-up, witty banter alone doesn't make a good story.
