I always thought that he meant Superman would help us advance our race and we'd unlock our hidden Kryptonian power. But what does it mean? Explain.

I heard someone surmise that it could be a hint about the upcoming Justice League. Personally, I think it's just a metaphor for making the world a better place.

@pfcoolio14: By giving us an example of who we can be. Truth, justice, sacrifice, tolerance. What makes Superman a hero for most is not his power set, but rather what's in his heart.

I'd wear it.

He was quoting All-Star Superman. In that Superman literally goes into a sun. but yeah, it's pretty clearly a metaphor for ascending to our potential greatness.

The Superman origin story changes a lot, but one of the elements that usually seems to occur is that Jor-El specifically chose Earth for Clark to go to, and specifically chose the Kent family to send him to, because of our/their inherit goodness. Hoping that they would shape him into the best man he could be. So there's a bit of chicken and the egg to it.
