I was in 6th grade back then. I remember a classmate of mine, King, who brought some of his old X-Men Classic comic books to school (X-Men Classic ish #66 & #67). I had no idea then what it was all about. I just thought it would be an interesting read so I borrowed some. Kids back home then weren't exposed to a lot of comic books because they were always expensive in pesos. But once I read a couple of those which my friend brought, I immediately asked him where he got it. It was the brood story arc- right after the dark phoenix saga (where Kitty was still the new kid on the block!).One weekend I asked him to take me to this comic book shop. Turned out it wasn't really a comic book shop but a boutique, where they sell clothes, bags, etc. But one wall was plastered with various comic books neatly arranged and sealed for sale.  And it was expensive! After that first visit, I started following up the X-Men (in the classic series). And though it ate up most of my allowance since then, I was hooked like Lockheed to Kitty.

But it was one character alone that had a strong hold on my adolescent years- Shadowcat. As the years went by I discovered all about heroes, villains, mutants, rebels, and just what it feels like being different. Kitty's angle on the team reflected a lot of my own growing up. So it was easy for me to really identify with her character. From the X-Men Classic series, I jumped right into Excalibur- the comic book shop had a couple of issues hanging on their wall and I recognized Kitty's classic blue ninja costume (by then Marvel's first trading card series came out). I had to grab it. It was poorly drawn- almost horrible. It was the story arc where they teamed up with the West Coast Avengers against Doctor Doom. I was introduced to this new team Kitty was in (still no clue as to what happened to the X-Men). I didn't care much that these weren't X-Men except for Nightcrawler (the only character I recognized) but it didn't matter. Shadowcat was in it! I guess the rest, as they say, is history!

I still have my first X-Men Classic issue- it was issue #69 of X-Men Classic. Man, I had my own world back then. And no matter how ugly the rest of the world was, in my heart, and often times in my thoughts, I too, was a member of the X-Men. What a dork!

Believe it or not it was Dragonball Z which got me into Mangas and then I watched Teen Titans and then red the beginning of Volume 3. So Geoff Johns got me into comics.

@goatman2112:  dc characters never really interested me much until later on- but the only title i picked up was catwoman (in her purple costume!) and then i learned about the wildcats and gen13- the art by jim lee (?) was a breather. it was new to me. i stuck it out for awhile until, in addition to my x-men comics, i had to cancel a couple of subscription. it was way over my budget and had no more storage room. so, those were the first to go.

I watched the old Timm verse and the teen titans show as a kid, for some reason I had never seen NW on the BTAS but saw him on Teen Titans, the idea that Robin had become his own hero sounded way too cool for a kids TV show so I had to check if that was taken from comics. The story of Dick Grayson was so cool, I had to check the original material. My first comic was the first issue of Bruce Jones' run, I hated it and the character still was compelling enough for me to want to read

X-Men TAS, Batman TAS and Spider Man TAS helped make the jump. What comics I first read was Dracula and Spider Man, A part of Maximum Carnage, Death of Superman and several X-Men comics as well as the Bat Broken saga in Batman. Spider Man, Rogue and Batman got me into it.

Wonder Woman, because I really liked her on that Jusice League show, but she didn't have her own cartoon and I wanted to see more of the character.

All the other super heroes I liked (Hulk, Spider Man, Superman, Batman, X-men) had shows I used to watch and live action movies, so I didn't really feel as compelled to shell out extra money to see more of them in comics.

Though techniclly the first comics I ever baught were Alien Vs. Predator, and I had read some old-school Spider-Man comics a friend let me borrow before that.

Hmmm...I think it was either a Marvel character,or my dad's co-created series...

Not too sure about which one got me hooked first.

The Thing and Captain America from comics and Captain Marvel/SHAZAM from the mid '70s saturday morning TV show.
Of course I liked Superman and Batman then as well, but neither of them compelled me like these other three.

i think i started reading comics on a regular basis though for Transformers, GIJOE and He-Man
and fell farther into superhero ones from there.

I was introduce to American Comics when my mother brought some home one day. They were all from the 1960s or 70s and they were: FF#100, Spectre# 3, Superman #163 and World's Finest #177

He really is. I'm not even American I just thought everything he stood for, the way he carried himself and always tried to do the best in any situation... it kinda stuck with me. I mean that kind of nobility and being genuinely good, you never saw that in movies or on TV back then.

Can't really contribute it to one character alone...Superman, Spider-Man, and The X-men were the big ones.
It started with cartoons though, not books...prob cuz I was too young to read.
My mom bought me some form of this vhs. Pretty sure that is what started it all.

Oh and this:

Honestly can't remember which one I had first though...

And then segued into trading cards: I had just about every set of Marvel trading crads made in the 90's
The image of this Marvel Masterpiece card used to haunt my nightmares

And this one...well this was the stuff of other dreams entirely for an 8 year old boy lol.
