http://comicbook.com/2015/03/04/warner-bros-chief-says-dc-comics-movies-edgier-than-marvel-movie/

Superhero films have been a punching bag of late because so many of them have are in the pipeline and most major studios, and some people are concerned that a superhero fatigue will occur soon. Next year, Warner Bros. will release Batman v Superman, which will be the cornerstone for their newly created DC cinematic universe. They're not concerned about superhero fatigue. “The key thing is that the movies and the television shows and the games, everything looks very different…you have to be able to take advantage of the diversity of these characters,” said Warner Bros.CEO KevinTsujihara at Wednesday’s Morgan Stanley Technology, Media &Telecom Conference.

We already know from Marvel that a cinematic universe can work. Can DC do it as well, yet put a bit of a different spin on it? “The worlds of DC are very different,” Tsujihara said. “They’re steeped in realism, and they’re a little bit edgier than Marvel’s movies.”

It also helps that DC has two of the biggest comic book superheroes to work with. “The big franchises are becoming more and more valuable,” stated Tsujihara. “You don’t have to explain to the consumer what a ‘Batman v Superman’ is.”

No Jokes may be true.

So what do you DC fans think about WB?

@project_worm: I don't really like Marvel's movies outside of the first Iron Man and Second Cap, I enjoyed GotG and TA, but I won't ever rewatch them.

I also don't like DC's approach that they started with MoS. Believe it or not, I think MoS was more grittier than Nolan's Batman, which is baffling to me. I need some heroism in a Superman, and not just when it comes to saving Lois.

Bleh. MoS' Lois is so everything I hate about Lois Lane.

So, no, I don't think WB should follow Marvel.

He is correct, and there's not much more to say about it.

I don't get why he's mentioning marvel

Because they are his competition and he needs to bring them up to highlight the difference between the movies his company is making and those Marvel is pushing out by the boatload.

He's trolling us lol. DCs not edgier than Marvel, darker?grittier? Yes. Gritty wasn't really the way to go with MoS and the dark tone made the movie drag in some spots, that was what made it a good movie instead of a great one.

Yeah my thoughts exactly... I was like "gee, now what decade does this guy live at?". Dark & edgy is SO -90's but hey if they can still keep producing great movies, who cares what the studio exec's say? Even if his out & cold like a snow man from today's trends.

@shazam117: That style is going to be overused when we get a dark and gritty

DoJ

Suicide Squad

Wonder Woman

Flash

Aquaman

Superman

Batman

Justice League

Shazam

Green Lantern

Cyborg

Justice League 2

How long do you think the dark gritty stuff will sell for them..

Dark and Gritty can sell just fine..if the movies are good. Same why the Marvel light-hearted "make a joke every 5 minutes" can sell...if the movies are good. It's about substance not style. Both approaches can also get old fast if all the movies become clones of one another. So far, Marvel has done a good job of keeping the style the same, but still making the movies different. Will WB be able to do the same? Time will tell.

Flash, would be my guess, but if they repeat the weakpoints of MoS probably Suicide Squad.

Great, now people are gonna run with the wo d "edgy" like they do with " dark and gritty" and use it wrong.

I think what he's saying is the tone of these films will be different from Marvel.

Marvel's heroes are brightly colored, DC's will be more monotone and dialed back.

Marvel's heroes crack jokes in the midst of battle and start break dancing, DC's will take it with more gravitas.

Marvel heroes feel like actual people, they argue, they may not get along, they disagree, make mistakes. DC's might be more like a Pantheon of gods, not taking orders from a SHIELD or government.

Of course, I could be wrong, but let's not get carried away by edgy.

It's okay to take your characters and your stories seriously. But it's very off-putting how fun-adverse DC has been as of late. I don't want to see edgy Superman or edgy Wonder Woman or even edgy Aquaman. I want to see realistic characterization of a larger-than-life individual. That doesn't mean the world has to bend over backwards for realism and edginess.

there was literally nothing in there about a no joke policy or anything that even suggested it

and I guess everyone is missing where he said they need to take advantage of the diversity of their characters

@manwhohaseverything: Dark and Gritty wouldnt work like that.

The MCU works because its played in a mix of elements comedy, triumph, sadness, joy etc.

DCCU is going for depressing and dark. Overall depends but if MOS is a hint to how future movies will be I dont see the tone sticking well.

Why wouldn't Dark and Gritty work like that? You're saying Dark and Gritty can't sell even if the films are good? If that was the case, Batman comics wouldn't sell, the Nolan Trilogy wouldn't have sold. I'd even say the X-Men franchise wouldn't have sold so far. The same way light-hearted can mix elements, so can dark and gritty.

I think the dark gritty style will continue to sell for WB/DC so long as the films they put out are consistently good. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Different characters, different tones. You can't paint every character with the same brush.

Marvel has seen this, and has set up Netflix as their 'darker' stories.

I'm thinking nobody has known what to do with Superman since Superman 2.

Marvel may not be 'edgy' (dark and gritty is edgy now?) but they at least have a different tone in each film. Winter Soldier and GotG, for example, feel completely different...as they should.

Superman shouldn't have Batman's tones. Neither should Arrow. Now I liked MoS and I'm sure I'll like the other DC films...but edgier? No. Neither franchise is what I'd call edgy.

And realistic? Neither is any more realistic than the other either.

No one was disputing whether or not the DC films were edgier than the Marvel ones. What people were disputing was whether or not that was a good thing. Which seems to have gone right over this guy's head. Which explains a lot.

Because its the only argument a DC fanboy have left even tho its crap.

The DD trailer alone is darker and edgier than anything DC has ever put out in their main universe. It showed a hero having a religion, a table covered in coke and a dead body in plain sight covered in blood. All things to adult for any part of DC's filmverse.

Edgier is more accurate, but melodramatic? Not really, dc just puts a more realistic perspective than marvel films do. Marvels more silly, lighthearted and comical aimed at the younger crowd where as DC is more serious, darker aimedbat more mature crowd, grim, darker and is brief with the comedy.

Both styles work for their movies. Thats all that matters.
