Boom!, Valiant, and Fantagraphics.
I think Boom! was smart to come out with Kaboom! When Boom! first came out I ate it up, and they continue to put out good books regularly. They've also been pretty smart about acquiring rights to some pretty popular shows and what not.
Valiant, they resurrected a whole dead universe and introduced it to new fans and old fans alike with widespread praise.
Fantagraphics, they give books a chance that I feel like nobody else would and sometimes it really pays off for them. Every time I've grabbed a Fantagraphics book I've been equal parts, amazed, impressed, and bewildered. I just love them.
Dynamite and Dark Horse for good Licensing choices. Valiant for creating quality stuff in a pretty vapid market a second time. Image for being creator driven.
@turoksonofstone: See, I'm not so impressed with licensed properties. or rehashing older characters, then again, I guess that's all Marvel and DC does.
Image, Vertigo, and Valiant are probably top three. Followed closely by Dark Horse.
The only thing I see from DC is marketing gimmicks, every fall, reminding everyone of the 90s.
I think Marvel needs some props for being a little experimental with their properties, but where I think Marvel excels is in the use of colorists that completely have their own style.
@knighthood: I hear you but a lot of great properties I personally enjoy are licensed like Aliens and Predator and they shine at Dark Horse. Dynamite also does a good job complementing the Public Domain characters they have revived by Licensing the big name Golden Age heroes who preceded the Superhero crowd and who deserve a spotlight of some kind IMO. Good point about Marvel and DC too btw.
