I don't have a "top five" but I've always felt that -and I'm sure Comic Vine will back me up on this - that Batman is one of the most underrated, unappreciated characters in comic book history, bar none.

Batman, Silver Age Superman, Silver Age Thor, Batman with prep and Jesus. Overrated list.

Overrated

DC- Wally West (He cannot beat COIE Anti Monitor, Galactus, Odin, or anyone near or a bit below skyfather), Batman (he can win any battle with prep... :P), Black Adam (WW3), Superboy Prime (every appearance), Superman Prime 1 Million (he's featless)

Marvel- Thor (w/out amps), Sentry (w/out Void or DS), Storm (and we all know why...), Iron Man (Bleeding Edge), Iceman (okay, maybe this is a stretch, but destroying his physical body can still count as a win/incapacitation guys)

Underrated

DC- Mr. Terrific (prep), Trigon (jobs a lot because of the Titans), Doctor Fate (any incarnation besides N52), Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes), Dru-Zod II (People treat him like he's so much weaker than Supes)

Marvel- Hulk/Maestro (So much Hulk-smashing on Hulk himself), Quasar (I never see him, and when he is on here I usually see people vote against him), Blue Marvel (He's not that much weaker than base Sentry), Hercules (Ever since he's been depowered people act like he's super weaker and should lose to every standard powerhouse), Super Skrull (So because he has powers from not-the-strongest-people-in-Marvel he is weaker than everyone who is stronger than the Fantastic Four?)

Also, I'd like to add that all of the Image and Valiant's (and other independent publishers') characters are underrated (except perhaps Spawn and The Darkness)

Overrated

Batman, Bane, Black Adam, Kaine, Daken

Underrated

Captain America, Cyclops, Wonder Woman

So when people make these list, are they honestly only thinking about the character, of how they are represented in the battle forums and not the actually quality and faults of the character.

I dont really know much but I will say Elektra is underrated and there are so many overrated characters that it isn't even funny

Underrated( this is based off of battle forum): elektra, cap America, cyclops,( daredevil usually doesn't get underrated but people on one thread think he would lose to Khan from Star Trek) and honestly Demi god Hercules needs some respect too.

I know, right! If they don't fix this soon, I'm quitting DC. They won't have my support if all they're going to do is publish all these horrible books like Green Arrow and Aquaman, while they leave Bats in the dust.
