What were your top 5 comic books or story arcs this past year?

Mine were (in no particular order):

  1. Elektra (Marvel)
  2. Nailbiter (Image)
  3. Batman (DC) -- Zero Year was great and Endgame has been great so far in my opinion
  4. Moon Knight (Marvel)
  5. TIE: Wonder Woman (DC) - Azarello/Chiang's run & New Avengers (Marvel)

The comics I enjoyed most this year where:

  1. Invincible
  2. Batman
  3. Lazarus
  4. Sheltered
  5. Green Arrow - Jeff Lemire's run.

I do still have some Image back reading to do, so this list may change.

4 Annihilator

5 Batman Eternal

Of course if you had asked this in July Elektra and Magneto would be up there at 2 and 3. Eternal actually got better while those 2 got worse.

Yes you do! I highly recommend starting from the beginning. It may take a while to catch up, but it's well worth it.

If you plan on going this route I suggest you pick up the first compendium. It collects the first 48 issues and a couple tie-ins, if I'm not mistaken.

It'll cost you about $60 - $40 if you buy it off Amazon - but doubt you'll be disappointed.

I agree about starting Invincible from the beginning. But, if you have access to a library, check there first, my library has ALL the trades and it saved me tons of money.

@battle_forum_junkie: I was lucky. One of my friends, who's also a comic book nerd works for the library. He orders in tons of trades for their system.

I didn't read enough new books for a full top 5, but I'll do what I can.

1. Green Arrow (up until Lemire got kicked off)

2. TMNT

3. Rocket Raccoon

4. Armor Hunters

@the_stegman You're a Lemire fan too?

@the_stegman: Green Arrow has made him into my favorite writer. I actually got to meet him at NYCC - he's a really cool guy, and we were both wearing Green Arrow shirts under our jackets.

@xwraith: That sounds awesome! And yeah, he seems cool, I loved his Animal Man stuff and of course, Green Arrow. He just wrote Teen Titans: Earth One, if you wanna give that a read too.

He did? I might check it out. People always tell me I should follow writers I like, not characters, although my low-budget pull list makes that difficult. But Jeff Lemire is the one writer who's name gets me excited for something.

Also, it's great to find something we both like - I used to think we had nothing in common.

@xwraith: Personally, I follow characters, not writers. But there are a select few writers I always will read.

And, yay, now we don't have to be mortal enemies! :D

@the_stegman: I've been told that that's not always the best way to do it, because every writer has a different interpretation of a character (some better than others).

Us? Enemies? I can't see that happening. To be honest, you always seemed like a pretty good guy.

@dathomiesilversurfer: Props to you for including Afterlife w/Archie on your list, such a good book.

right? I'm not even an archie reader, only knowing the OG characters (betty, veronica, reggie, jughead) beforehand and I'm loving it. Especially the weird incestuous twin thing, über creepy. Unfortunately, most people I suggest it to don't even give it a chance.

@battle_forum_junkie: Your library may have access to a lot of books that are not in your local branch. Most libraries are part of a bigger network that loan books to each other. Check their online catalog to see if you can order from other libraries and have them delivered to your branch or just ask one of the librarians. I was able to get a lot of books that way.

5. Green Arrow..would've been higher except I really disliked Sorrentino's art. (Everyone had the same face!) Lemire's writing was great on it. (Something he doesn't do with JLU.)

I actually just read the whole Azzarello and Chiang run on Wonder Woman between yesterday and now. I would probably put the 2014 issues above Armor Hunters as it was a great story.

I didn't plan for it to happen, but my four favorite books for the year are all female protagonists.
