The Influential Comics, Toys, Animation and Film Icon Makes Rare Convention Appearance
TODD MCFARLANE TO MAKE SPECIAL APPEARANCE AT WIZARD WORLD CHICAGO!Industry great Todd McFarlane will make his first return to Wizard World Chicago in nearly a decade, and he’s bringing a huge announcement with him!
The Image Comics founder will host the first public unveiling of the new SPAWN creative team, leading to a re-launch of the title later this year. McFarlane will be on hand at Wizard World Chicago to give more details about the upcoming SPAWN re-launch and to give fans insight into his past, present and future. His comics have sold millions of copies, and his entrepreneurial skills helped create Image Comics – as well as the groundbreaking McFarlane Toys. McFarlane also holds the honor of illustrating the very first cover for Wizard magazine.
One of the most important comic creators of all time, Todd McFarlane rose to superstardom in the 1990s while penciling Amazing Spider-Man, co-creating the web-slinger’s most threatening foe, Venom. After breaking records by selling 2.5 million copies of Spider-Man #1, which he both wrote and illustrated, McFarlane left Marvel and created Image Comics with six of the most popular artists of the era. The premiere issue of his creator-owned comic for Image, SPAWN sold 1.7 million copies and is still the biggest selling independent comic of all time.
“Todd McFarlane ranks as one of the most influential creators in modern comics history and his influence spans comics, toys, animation, movies and music videos,” said Wizard Entertainment Senior VP/Operations Joe Yanarella. “It truly is a unique opportunity for Wizard World to be able to bring Todd to Chicago to meet his loyal fan base.”
Through Todd McFarlane Entertainment, SPAWN went on to become a cultural icon, appearing in a successful feature length film and a critically acclaimed animated series on HBO. The company’s unique and intricately textured dark style drew the attention of popular rock bands Pearl Jam, KoRn and Disturbed, all of whom tapped the company for music videos.
The current landscape of the action figure industry owes much to internationally award-winning McFarlane Toys. Formed in 1994, the company pioneered lifelike sculpture and highly detailed painting techniques, creating a successful formula that has been integrated into all mainstream toy manufacturing. In additions to the record-breaking SPAWN toy line, McFarlane has produced figures based on blockbuster movies “The Matrix,” “The Godfather” and “Alien vs. Predator,” and has replicated some of the most iconic artists of our time, including Elvis, KISS, the Beatles and Motley Crue. In March 2008, the company launched the hugely successful HALO 3 line of action figures and vehicles based on the most popular video game series of all time. The company also makes official league-licensed figures for NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA within its Sports Picks™ line, as well as Legends lines in all four sports.
During his appearance on Saturday, June 28, Todd McFarlane will appear in a special SPAWN panel at 11 A.M., with tickets to be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis at 12 noon Friday, June 27. Todd will also participate in additional signings and panels throughout the day and several upcoming McFarlane Toys will be on display at the Wizard Entertainment Booth.
