HELLO!

This has been a question I have had for quite some time.

In your opinion, who is the best writer in the industry currently? This should not be based on sales alone (the 1990's was proof of this...), but on actual QUALITY of the material. What kind of emotional response do you get from your choice? Why do you buy his/her work? Are they better as a mainstream powerhouse or an independent-creator owned kind of person? I'm curious!

I might as well answer first. Personally, I think the best writer of today is Brian K. Vaughan. He is so freaking talented. Saga is arguably the strongest book being published today, and obviously Y: The Last Man is legendary in it's own way. Oh, and Ex Machina is a fantastically original idea.

LET THE DISCUSSION COMMENCE!

Not sure of the definite best, but one of the people who is right up there is Justin Jordan.

He created Luther Strode, which is a fantastic series and pretty cool concept altogether.

He also did a pretty great job of reintroducing Shadowman to the Valiant universe.

He's best as an independent/creator owned type person.

Grant Morrison. His mainstream work is his best, and he brings an unparallelled level of creativity and sophistication to his work. I also consider him a personal hero of mine.

Brian K. Vaughan. His work on Saga is probably one of the best independent comics I've read in years!

Jeff Lemire and Brian K. Vaughan are my inspirations as a writer myself, so I totally agree with you there.

Mike Mignola has been the best and most consistent writer for a long time now. Mike Costa writer of the brilliant G.I. Joe: Cobra series is unbelievable and seriously not talked about enough. Mark Waid has been great on DD. Robert Kirkman and Walking Dead is just awesomeness.

Evan Dahm, built his own world and made you really feel for the characters. Some of the most consistently great writing I've ever seen.

My favourites:

Robert Vendetti-having so much fun with X-O manowar

Marvel-Matt Fraction/Rick Remender

DC-Geoff Johns and Grant Morrison. Also find Peter Milligan to be underrated.

Brian K. Vaughn, Hickman and Scott Snyder imo. Hickman's New Avengers and Avengers just feel so grand, it's amazing. Snyder's batman is always being shoved shit in his face to show that he's human and Saga is so much fun.

Runner ups are Rick Remender, James Roberts and the creative team on the Flash.

@nuclearboi: Well I agree. Saga is one of the only stories that makes menlaugh think come close to tears brings a smile to my face. Saga is incredible. But to answer your question more directly....the only writers who have made me really feel something have been JMS, Grant Morrison, Bendis and BJV. I'd say the best out of that group, for me, would have to be BKV. Saga is just so good. I've never read anything by him other than saga but I will. Saga is the best thing I've read since I surged reading comics and I've read all star superman, the killing joke and Birthright.

I think Morrison is overrated. He's creative; true! But, sometimes his creativity gets in the way of his narrative. I will always say that Morrison is the perfect writer for characters you don't care about because he will toss continuity out the window to fit his narrative. If he were to write something like Inhumans or Steel I'd pick it up in a heartbeat.

But to answer the question, in order it's

1) Hickman

2) Brubaker

3) Snyder

4) Waid

5) David
