The Mandarin In Iron Man 3

Marvel's been really sketchy about details for Iron Man 3. They've said it'll involve the Extremis storyline, that it'll be shot in China, and that Ben Kingsley will play an unspecified villain. Rumors are that he'll be the leader of a group called The Mandarin. But they're just rumors. C'mon and tell us Marvel! The Mandarin is to Tony Stark what The Joker is to Batman. He needs to be in one of these movies.

I'd certainly love to see him, and the Ten Rings group from the first film points in this direction. On the other hand, I highly doubt he'll look anything like the Mandarin in the comics. If anything, Ben Kingsley means the character will no longer be Chinese but instead of middle Eastern descent, and I think the rings themselves will be considerably altered to fit the feel the films have going on.

this

Mandarin is too much of a racist stereotype to be used in the big screen. Also, middle eastern fits better with the MCU and IM origin

NOTE: I LOVE BEN KINGSLEY!!

I don't see it as much of an improvement, to be honest. Instead of a Yellow Peril villain, he'll be a leader of a middle eastern terrorist organization. Stereotypes are stereotypes. Some are just more acceptable in this day and age.

@AtPhantom: yeah, but that's the thing, it fits better in this day and age, and in the MCU, because the MCU story was also made thinking of this day and age.

And hopefully there will be some improvement. Mandarin would be not only ideologically and psychologically stereotypical but also visually. Hopefully, in this case he wont be visually ( at least)

Shane Black, co-writer and director of IM3 specifically stated that he wasn't interested in using the Mandarin, So if Kingsley is playing Mandarin he will be radically altered or a combination of other villains like Sebastian Shaw in First Class or Ivan Vanko in IM2

Yes, if Mandarin is to be used he will be drastically different, and would obviously be connected to the Ten Rings that were seen in the first Iron Man.

F you Shane Black. And although I didnt like how overpowered they made Shaw in first class, IM2, Vanko, had the right combination of Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash. Dynamo's name and sort of origins, and the genius to create electricfied whips and being hired by Justin Hammer that Whiplash had. Vanko even suits up in an armor similar to the Dynamo's, complete with Whiplash whips when he fights Stark and Rhodes at the Stark Expo. But c'mon, it's fine to alter a character from comics to fit the movies, but if there's no super powered rings with The Mandarin in this movie, then there's no point of Mandarin being in the movie at all, and Black will crush him like Raimi crushed Venom.

I agree, we need the rings.

I find it amusing that in order for the director to remove the racial stereotype from Mandarin's origin they've decided to have a white guy play him. How come when Heimdal and Kingpin were made Black in their movies hundreds of people flipped out but no one seems to be bothered by having a white guy play a traditionally Chinese character?

The Mandarin did start out as a stereotype but the character has evolved, from interviews I've gathered that the people making the Iron Man movies know nothing about the character, they mention magic rings, but his rings aren't magic they are solely technology based, He is currently much more than a racist caricature he started as. He's a smart, well developed character who is Iron Man's greatest threat

Eh. Start out with Hammer & Stane as vilains first before they get into less scientific villains.

Maybe they'll incorporate nanobots (kinda like Ultimate IM) so that Stark finally becomes more that "just a guy in a suit" like a ton of people seem to think.

It has never been confirmed that Kingsley is playing Mandarin or anything associated with him.....all we know so far is that the movie is probably going to be based off Extremis.......the Deathlok related character ( I cannot remember his name), Firepower...a lesser known Iron Man character and Adrian Killiach will be played by Guy Pearce are all the new characters we know
