Me and my friend had a debate about the title and he said "Darth Vader" due to him being a great character and having arguably one of the biggest impacts in Movie history. I am a fan of star wars however not enough to name darth vader but understood why. My thoughts is...Spiderman, Not only is he a amazing character that really helped marvel battle DCs Supes and bats but its his morals and origin that really makes him great. Sure he isnt the strongest character but he alwaya tries his best no matter what and no matter who threatings new york hes willing to defend the city even against certain defeat . He saves the very people who hates and tries to kill him and always tries hes best. He is the heart of marvel....So do you guys agree or have your own choice? And why?
The greatest fictional character of all time?
The Doctor.
Best character.
@those_eyes: Kirby is awesome
@mynameiswill: The greatest fighting game character ever! with sub zero
I like Spidey, he has had a cultural impact on the world and he is an icon of not only Marvel but super heroes in general. When I think of super heroes I immediately think of Spidey, Supes, Batman and Captain America. Having said that, I would still go with Vader. There are only 2 characters that I think a person could hear, not see, and know exactly who they are. Vader and Godzilla. Vader just has so much going for him. Iconic look, voice, breathing, poses, weapon sound and quite possibly the most recognized movie quote of all time. He is probably the most well known villain in cinematic history.
Just my opinion.

Someone else begs to differ:
@laytonc97: Sub-Zero is cool too :)
It's hard to just pick one, considering the sheer amount of genres, recognizability, longevity of their franchises, etc...so here's a few I'd think are contenders:
Spider-Man
Batman
Superman
Goku
Drizzt Do'Urden (lacks recognition, been has been protagonist to nothing but best-selling stories for over two decades)
Indiana Jones
Darth Vader
Spock
Godzilla
Bugs Bunny
Mickey Mouse
I'm not even a fan of some of those listed, but I think plenty of them have some justification depending on your criteria.
Way out west there was this fella... fella I wanna tell ya about. Fella by the name of Jeff Lebowski. At least that was the handle his loving parents gave him, but he never had much use for it himself. Mr. Lebowski, he called himself "The Dude". Now, "Dude" - that's a name no one would self-apply where I come from. But then there was a lot about the Dude that didn't make a whole lot of sense. And a lot about where he lived, likewise. But then again, maybe that's why I found the place so darned interestin'. They call Los Angeles the "City Of Angels." I didn't find it to be that, exactly. But I'll allow there are some nice folks there. 'Course I can't say I've seen London, and I ain't never been to France. And I ain't never seen no queen in her damned undies, so the feller says. But I'll tell you what - after seeing Los Angeles, and this here story I'm about to unfold, well, I guess I seen somethin' every bit as stupefyin' as you'd see in any of them other places. And in English, too. So I can die with a smile on my face, without feelin' like the good Lord gypped me. Now this here story I'm about to unfold took place back in the early '90s - just about the time of our conflict with Sad'm and the I-raqis. I only mention it because sometimes there's a man... I won't say a hero, 'cause, what's a hero? But sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about the Dude here. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's the Dude, in Los Angeles. And even if he's a lazy man - and the Dude was most certainly that. Quite possibly the laziest in Los Angeles County, which would place him high in the runnin' for laziest worldwide. But sometimes there's a man, sometimes, there's a man. Aw. I lost my train of thought here. But... aw, hell. I've done introduced him enough.
Jesus Christ by far.
Impossible to say, there are a lot:
-Godzilla
-Batman
-Superman
-Hulk
-Master Chief.
-Goku
-Naruto.
-Romeo and Julliet.
-Kratos.
-Darth vader.
-Cthulhu.
-Ronald Macdonald.
One Punch Man is amazing and all, but he's way to new.
@laytonc97: There are so many characters to choose from although being a massive Star Wars fan Darth Vader isn't even close to being the best villain. There are 2 many more in depth villains than him for him to be in the top 5.
@helmutzemo: Dude, relax.
Superman is the most recognizable fictional character worldwide.
@lateralus: BAM! Beat us to it.

Google Trends do not lie. At first I thought it was close, until I added the variant ways to search for the characters. It would seem that Spider-Man does indeed have a slight edge when you combine all the data.
The biggest thing we can take away from this is that most people do not know that it's spelled "Spider-Man". ;)
In my opinion, Darth Vader is a better and more iconic character than Spider-Man. However, as a fanboy I must nominate Iron Man as the greatest fictional character of all time :D
