Poll: The Comic Vine 2013 Movie Awards VOTING: Best Visual Effects (627 votes)

Iron Man 3 5%
Man of Steel 31%
Pacific Rim 35%
Star Trek Into Darkness 6%
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug 15%
Thor: The Dark World 8%

Welcome to the second edition of the Comic Vine Movie Awards! We know there's plenty of fantastic looking movies heading our way in the years to come, but let's take some time to reflect on just how much awesomeness was packed into 2013. We each have our favorites and now you have the opportunity to tell the world why these films deserve praise.

Keeping it limited to just comic book movies would restrict matters, so we included a few films we know the community really dug this year, too. We've created 10 categories -- ranging from best director to best movie -- and ultimately, the winner of each category will be determined by your votes. Will Marvel and DC take a majority of the awards or will one of the other films swoop in and earn extra praise? Go get your vote on, Viners!

To vote in other categories, check out the main article which will be located on the homepage!

Winners will be announced next Monday (12/30/13).

Best special effects goes to Pacific Rim hands down, although I wish they really did have more daytime action sequences :(

Pacific Rim, easily.

#5 Edited by k4tzm4n (36451 posts) - - Show Bio

The entire scene with Smaug = earned my vote.

#6 Posted by Jonny_Anonymous (32861 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim

MoS was just green screen but Del Toro actually built the inside of the mechs.

#7 Posted by Ninjablade09 (3105 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim hands down.

#8 Posted by Mucklefluga (2524 posts) - - Show Bio

C'mon the answer is Star Trek guys!!!

If you voted for Hobbit then that saddens me. The scene with the gold, bleurgh.

I voted Pacific Rim but all of these deserve votes except The Hobbit. The liquid gold aka macaroni cheese was just horrid. The practical effects in the Lord of the Rings trilogy really blow away everything they've done in The Hobbit so far.

I'm have to go with Pacific Rim.

Man Of Steel. Krypton looked amazing!

#12 Posted by RustyRoy (11119 posts) - - Show Bio

Hobbit easily

Pacific RIM damnit!!! Mon of Steel overdid it.

@k4tzm4n: Agreed. Smaug actually looked real. Best dragon I've seen in any live action movie.

Easily Pacific Rim.

#18 Posted by ULTRAstarkiller (5942 posts) - - Show Bio

Hobbit.....GOLDEN SMAUG...

#19 Posted by MuyJingo (1563 posts) - - Show Bio

Not sure why MoS is getting so many votes. Making people fly and destroying cities is not so impressive.

#20 Edited by tomlikesfries (4626 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim easily.

#21 Posted by BlackLegRaph (665 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim or MOS. None of the others come close.

#22 Posted by Outside_85 (8170 posts) - - Show Bio

Have to give it to Pacific Rim, it's the only thing it does very very well.

#23 Posted by War Killer (19992 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim's effects were awesome, that second-to-last fight looked freakin' epic on the big screen.

#24 Edited by Lunacyde (17966 posts) - - Show Bio other movie had something on the scale and grandeur of Smaug. MoS was a close second.

#25 Posted by mikeman1090 (9 posts) - - Show Bio

@k4tzm4n: Same here. Smaug was just intimidatingly awesome

#26 Posted by ImTheDamnBatman (3548 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim, it was awesome CGI.

#27 Posted by marvel_dc_heroes_villains (133 posts) - - Show Bio

I found that Hobbit looked a bit cheap, like all the money had gone on the (admittedly utterly incredible) Smaug. Everything else looked impressive, but nothing really blew me away with its unique effects like Pacific Rim did.

#28 Posted by Skyfire (706 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim's effects were the best I've ever seen, never mind the best of 2013. MOS doesn't deserve to win.

#29 Posted by Ostyo (6750 posts) - - Show Bio

The Hobbit iz the only right answer.

#30 Posted by Doctor_Malekith (58 posts) - - Show Bio

I can't decide between The Hobbit, Pacific Rim, Man of Steel, and Star Trek Into Darkness.

#31 Posted by reaverlation (14128 posts) - - Show Bio

MoS is awesome and all but over Pacific Rim?Not happening

#32 Posted by EnigmaLantern (718 posts) - - Show Bio

I voted Star Trek, simply because I haven't seen Pacific Rim or The Hobbit

#33 Posted by tximinoman (221 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim should win this one.

#34 Edited by danaquinn (9 posts) - - Show Bio

Definitely Pacific Rim. Most of the film was full CGI, yet each second was brilliant.

#35 Posted by buttersdaman000 (9491 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim easily

#36 Edited by TimeLordScience (770 posts) - - Show Bio

Come on everyone, help Man of Steel lose a category! Lol, but really, Pacific Rim's visuals were great.

#37 Posted by GrenadeFlow (1373 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim IMO

MOS comes in second place

#38 Posted by feedonatreefrog (200 posts) - - Show Bio

I love Man of Steel, but some of the CGI was uneven.

While a lot of it was impressive, there were some really bad CG shots.

Pacific Rim had perfect CGI, and a lot of it too.

#39 Posted by GodDamnIronMan (1553 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim hands down!

#40 Edited by Shallbecomeabattoo (363 posts) - - Show Bio

MoS. As much as I think that parts of the Smallville fight looked weird and plastic the end fight with zod and the destruction in Metropolis really had my jaw on the floor, like nothing else. Pacific Rim may have better visual effects all around, but MoS wowed me much more nonetheless.

#41 Posted by logy5000 (5655 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim, no contest.

Didn't anyone but me notice that Micheal Shannon was walking on a treadmill when he said: "I'm going to make them suffer Kal. I will take them all from you 1 by 1?" And that Superman hovering directly afterward was cable suspension?

#45 Edited by M3th (2042 posts) - - Show Bio

Pacific Rim or Hobbit? Decisions.

#46 Posted by Jaymundo (168 posts) - - Show Bio

I am suprised this is not a tight battle between The Hobbit and Pacific Rim
