fixed
From my experience with non-readers:
In terms of total popularity (including people who've never read a comic but TOTEZ THINK SCARLETT WIDOW/ ENTIRE MALE CAST OF DKR WAS HAWT), familarity, and accounting for recent cinematic adaptions, over the last few decades I'd say:
DC
1. Batman
2. Superman
3. Wonder Woman
4. the Flash (whether Barry or Wally is up for debate)
5. Hal Jordan
Marvel
1. Spider-Man
2. Wolverine
3. Hulk
4. Iron Man
5. Captain America
Here are lists a little crazy .. hee hee
Superman below Batman
Captain America below Iron Man and Hulk
Who understands this?
DC:
Now which Flash & which Green Lantern I do not know.
Marvel:
I'd assume the character with the most books, appearances in other books, merch, television appearances, and movie appearances would be an indicator of popularity... or just over saturation.
DC is Batman by a good margin then superman. Wondy, GL, and Flash can argue amongst themselves although I think GL is next, followed by Wondy, and the Flash.
Marvel is Spiderman and I honestly could make an argument for Hulk, Iron Man, Wolverine, and Cpt America all being number 2. Marvel seems to take better care of all its characters in regard to marketability.
This is correct...only I might switch GL and Flash's space..and put a hyphen in Spider-Man's name.
- Superman
- Batman
- Wonder Woman
- Flash
- Green Lantern
- Spiderman
- Wolverine
- Iron Man
- Captain America
- Hulk

@Goldenboy_Prime: It really is Hulk & Wolverine for Number 2 in Marvel.
Yeah but Iron Man has had a huge resurgence due to his movie. I just saw some Iron man cartoon the other day, I think it had him based out of Japan for whatever reason and there's that weird one with him being a high schooler or something too. But I don't watch a lot of television so I really don't know what some of the others have out. Cpt America is probably a clear cut five, now that I think about it.

Anyone who thinks that Joker isn't in DC's top 5 is crazy.
I don't know for me I tie Batman's rogues and the Bat-family to Batman. If I were to break it down though you would be correct about Joker being top 5. I guess the thread does say characters and not heroes.
