Some SDCC Superhero Movie News

So I've been following superherohype.com, CV, and all the others on what movie news has been/will be revealed at SDCC. Here's what I've gathered so far, although I'm sure you guys already know of such things :)

  • It's confirmed that there will be another Fantastic Four movie (reboot) and it will be directed by Josh Trank, the guy who did Chronicle. That's awesome, because Chronicle was awesome, so in turn, this movie should be awesome.
  • If Fox doesn't have anything to say about a Daredevil movie by this Fall, the rights will revert back to Marvel/Disney, which means that if that goes to pass, we could get a movie where Punisher and Daredevil crossover (as Marvel/Disney would own both of them). Or, even better, we could potentially get a Marvel Knights movie with DD, Punisher, Cage, Iron Fist, etc. Best thing ever? I think so.
  • Apparently, Man of Steel will be the only superhero movie that DC/WB will be putting out in the next 3 years. In that 3 year gap, they'll probably brood about how epic Avengers was, and they'll finally pull their thumbs out of their asses and start making great movies that aren't about Batman. The Flash, Green Lantern 2, and Wonder Woman movies are all supposedly in development. The MOS teaser has been confirmed to be about a minute and a half long, will debut at SDCC, and will be attached to The Dark Knight Rises. UPDATE: It was shown, and people literally cried. When asked about Justice League, Snyder said that Superman's the crowned jewel of the DC superheroes. They want to test out his world before they go further onto that road. For some reason, Snyder kept avoiding to say that Zod is the villain. What's that about?
  • Oh, and Justice League. We might not see it right away, but when it happens, it'll be great. DC's trying to get more video games starring the characters to get them more familiar to the public, so that's the deal with Injustice: Gods Among Us, Lego Batman 2, and the new "Arkham" prequel (2014), which will apparently feature the JLA. Oh, and that's also why WB is pushing the Green Arrow show so hard. My question: Why the hell can't we get a new JL cartoon that's just as awesome as Young Justice? Now would be the best time for that.

And that's it for right now... Apparently there's gonna be huge news later on today about Iron Man 3, and my lover Ant-Man, so I'll keep you posted because I have nothing better to do :'D

Discuss?

Edit: Here's the new Iron Man armor for Iron Man 3:

  • UPDATE: At the Iron Man 3 panel, Don Cheadle, who plays War Machine/James Rhodes, confirmed that Mandarin is in fact a villain in the film, but he will not be the only one. So that confirms so far that the film will feature AIM, Extremis, and Mandarin, as well as the Iron Patriot armor... Interesting.

Edit: Saturday evening was huge, and I'm sure everyone who's anyone knows what was revealed. If not, let's recap:

  • The Captain America sequel will be called Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That confirms the return of Bucky Barnes, something that we all should have expected. It's awesome to have confirmation, though. There's very high speculations that Falcon will also be in the film as well. Release date is confirmed to be April 4, 2014.

  • Thor 2 will be called Thor: The Dark World, and it's release date is November 8, 2013. Loki will not be the main bad guy, which leads many to suspect it's a bigger threat than even he. Surtur maybe?
  • Ant-Man footage was shown, and this is a description of what it was all about:
  • They then revealed test footage that Wright shot for Ant-Man, after Wright toyed for a bit with the audience saying they wouldn’t really want to see a clip of stuff with wires and blue screens in it. It’s completely unfinished since they shot it two weeks ago, but they showed the footage anyway because Marvel absolutely owns Comic-Con. The footage opened with Ant-Man sitting on a ledge in an air conditioning vent that lead to a hallway guarded by two agents. The costume was pretty metallic looking, and he snuck through the vent hole and started running down the hallway. He morphed to normal size, shocking the guards, then morphed back down to ant size and kept running. Still in “ant size” he leapt up and punched one of the guys in the face, knocking the spit out of him, then he ran and attacked the other guard.
The footage was obviously rough, but I thought the big/small effects worked great. Wright found a way to make Ant-Man’s power work in a cool and useful way on screen, while still allowing room for the playful tone that he does so well. The lights then came back up.
  • “I’ve been doing one second of that for the last six years,” quipped Wright
  • Wright confirmed that the costume mixing the Silver Age and contemporary Ant-Man, adding “Ant-Man will kick your ass one inch at a time.”
  • Wright said there’s no casting to announce, but “revealed” that Ant-Man has been here all day, pulling out an Ant-Man title card and putting it on the table next to him.

Unfortunately, we don't have an exact release date, but it is confirmed that it's finally happening.

And that's that! If you asked me, I'd say that it's safe to believe that Marvel won this portion of SDCC! As cool as all that Marvel stuff was, the Man of Steel teaser was very well-received, so while DC/WB didn't have much, they at least aren't going home losers.

Urgh damn you and your non existing plans DC

#3 Posted by Lvenger (8228 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

Wow the Extremis armour looks awfully... yellow. I guess I'm too used to a predominantly red colour scheme for the armour. I wonder what makes Tony change his mind about the colour?

#4 Posted by Gambit1024 (9889 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@Lvenger: I don't think I like it. I see that they're going for the Bleeding Edge look, but the colors are turning me off... Maybe if they were inverted, I wouldn't have a problem, but for right now, I don't think I like it....

#5 Posted by Lvenger (8228 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@Gambit1024: I know I feel the same. Why do you think they're going for Bleeding Edge over Extremis? Bleeding Edge only came about a couple of years ago whilst Extremis had this big major story arc that actually made the armour an important character development plot point for Tony? I hope it's just Bleeding Edge in terms of visuals and not story as well. Extremis' nanotechnology would fit in quite well to the improvements Tony's made to his armour in each film.

#6 Posted by Gambit1024 (9889 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@Lvenger: I think it's gonna play out exactly as you said. The Extremis armor has practically already been used in all the Iron Man movies thus far (visually), so for them to actually be doing the Extremis story, they have to change up the way the armor looks in one way or another. Seeing as how this is the suit that Iron Man's wearing in the books now, it's smart that they're using the Bleeding Edge look visually, to familiarize the movie-goers who are still new to the comic books.

#7 Posted by Zomboid (739 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

The new Iron Man suit looks absolutely horrible.

DC news is disappointing. No movies for 3 years? Lame.

#8 Posted by Gambit1024 (9889 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@Zomboid: I know it's a bummer... But the way I see it: The longer they wait, the better the movies will become (hopefully). You can't just slap a whole bunch of stuff together and make the JLA. You gotta romance it. Get everything perfect before you go down that road, ya know? But yeah, as long as they'll be pumping out something, whether it's video games, cartoons, etc. I guess I'll be happy.

From the way you put it, Iron Man 3's sounding better already.

So basically DC has decided to just give up on movies for the next 3 years. Guess that's how long it'll take to find a new guy to make Batman cause god forbid they make a Wonder Woman or Flash movie

When you're right you're right. I think after Green Lantern, DC will be making their next moves very, very carefully, hence the long wait.

#12 Posted by Big_Nasty (323 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

DC fells that they do not have to rush to make a move b/c of their reboot, their comic book sales are #1.They successfully create amazing animate movies. Top Rated TV shows with live-action show coming soon. 3 successful games in a row (DCUO, Arkham City,Lego Batman 2). And I fill that DC cant compete with marvel in quantity of movie b/c only WB distribute their movies and Marvel has Disney, Sony, and Fox.

#13 Posted by joshmightbe (19943 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@Gambit1024: They don't seem to realize that the reason Marvel is kicking their asses in the movie area (Batman excluded) is because Marvel is willing to take risks on lesser known characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy

#14 Posted by Gambit1024 (9889 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@joshmightbe: Absolutely agreed. If DC had the cojones to get up and make that Wonder Woman movie, or that Flash movie, or hell, even that Plastic Man movie, they'd be in an entirely different position than where they are now. Sure, the current Marvel movies have been great for the most part, but they didn't get to where they are today without making some bad movies (Elektra, Ghost Rider, etc.) GL may have tried and failed, but at least it tried.

#15 Posted by WildStyle (331 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

Eh, I kinda understand DC's logic but at the same time, 3 years is a long wait. They have to execute the movies going forward perfectly so the time frame gives them enough time.

I think the crazy thing is that the Guardians Of The Galaxy and Ant Man could be getting a movie before the Justice League. Who ever thought that would happen in a million years? It really feels like the twilight zone.

#16 Posted by joshmightbe (19943 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@Gambit1024: The problem with the GL movie was easy to spot, they didn't have any definitive idea of what they wanted to do with the movie. They had things that only made sense to people that have been reading GL for 20 years and some things that made no sense at all like when Hal went all the way to Oa to ask if it was OK if he fought Parallax on his own, Sinestro going villain in the after credits for absolutely no reason as far as the general movie watcher knows and the whole Hector Hammond thing was pointless. Basically they tried to cram 3 movies worth of stuff into an hour and a half.

#17 Posted by Gambit1024 (9889 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@joshmightbe: If only they'd gone with their original script. The damn thing even had a Superman cameo...

#18 Posted by joshmightbe (19943 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@Gambit1024: It looked like someone tossed 8 scripts on the table and gave a writer 20 minutes to combine them all

#19 Posted by Gambit1024 (9889 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@joshmightbe: Totally. What do you think about the FF and Daredevil stuff?

#20 Posted by joshmightbe (19943 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@Gambit1024: I honestly hope Fox doesn't touch Daredevil, as far as FF goes I just hope they fix Dr. Doom, I don't know what the hell they were thinking with him in the last 2 movies. He complimented Reed Richards in the first 5 minutes, Doom should never under any circumstances treat Reed with anything but contempt. Also Doom shouldn't have a shared origin with the team. And please for the love of god do a good CG Thing, the age of the rubber suit is over Avengers and the Incredible Hulk proved they can do a believable CG Hulk, so they can do it with Thing.

#21 Posted by Gambit1024 (9889 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@joshmightbe: Yeah, I've wanted a good Daredevil movie since forever. I might be in the minority, but I really didn't hate the Ben Affleck one. Sure, it wasn't great, but it wasn't as awful as everyone makes it out to be, imo. But yeah, if Marvel/Disney gets it, it'd be a dream come true. So much closer to that Marvel Knights movie I've always wanted.

I trust Josh Trank. If you saw Chronicle, you'd know that he can direct a great villain. I didn't care for the other FF movies at all. Only three people did their jobs correctly: Ioan Gruffud, Mike Chiklis, and Chris Evans. Everything else about those movies were pretty much garbage. If they do decide to go with an all CGI Thing, I hope to God they get a great voice actor. I need that New Yorker accent, lol.

DC, just give us a god damn Wonder Woman movie!

#24 Posted by joshmightbe (19943 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

@Gambit1024: I didn't hate the Daredevil movie, the directors cut actually makes it pretty good and I thought Micheal Clark Duncan was great as Kingpin but it can be done better.

@joshmightbe: Hopefully DD can go back to Marvel.

#27 Posted by RedOwl_1 (1664 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

Finally DC will move their lazy asses, and please Marvel do a "Marvel Knights" movie pleeeeeeease

#28 Posted by Lvenger (8228 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

The worst thing about the FF movies for me was Doctor Doom. That was not the Doom of the comics that I grew up reading and love. They removed everything that was great about the character and created a new one in Doom's stead. Unacceptable. Stick with the source material next time Marvel and cast the right actor!

#29 Posted by BiteMe-Fanboy (6654 posts) - 11 months, 4 days ago - Show Bio

Great news that a new FF movie is in the works. And I really hope Daredevil rights switches back to Marvel/Disney... and MOS teaser? Shoot, bout only reason why I'm going to see TDKR. -ducks-.

Am I the only one that thinks that the "we won't do nothing for 3 years" DC move is BS? I call bluff, they are probably hiding something as some type of strategy just to make it more juicy

I'm not so sure. I agree, that three years is a long time, but maybe that's exactly what WB needs. Marvel didn't exactly think up the Avengers Initiative overnight. Maybe in this time gap, WB will get their stuff straight and do something that'll be just as good as what Marvel's got right now.

@Gambit1024: Do we have any information on which Ant-Man will be in the movie? Last I heard it was both Pym and Lang, but I haven't heard any thing to confirm this at Comic-Con or from Marvel.

Either way, Captain America, Iron Man 3, and Ant-Man are the movies I'm looking the most forward to. Guardians of The Galaxy, while I know little to nothing about them, also as my interest as well.
#46 Posted by Gambit1024 (9889 posts) - 11 months, 2 days ago - Show Bio

@War Killer: Nothing was said on which Ant-Man will be used in the movie at SDCC, but I remember reading that they were gonna use Pym in flashback scenes and Lang for present day. We'll see I guess.

Cap 2 is gonna be great. Winter Soldier is something that would be translated excellently onto film.

Actually, according to Feige, they did. He said something like when they were making Iron Man, someone noticed they had rights to other characters and thought of using some stuff like Stark Tech as props and items in others movies just for the sake of keeping it close to the comics and then someone said, "hey, why not actually putting them together and maybe move from then on?" and then they thought of the Avengers Initiave. Im not saying I believe what Feige said, but they probably didn't take 3 years to start doing their stuff. And DC already has MOS going, a Bat reboot planed for 2015/16 and they already had Green Lantern, so... I donno.

It's just kinda disappointing to know that we won't see anything from DC for ages in the movie department while Marvel is pumping its body at full blood in that area
