Should I read Countdown before Final Crisis?

I've just heard some bad things about Countdown. Is it necessary? Is it worth it?

No and no. Don't do it.

Final Crisis is confusing as it is the first couple of times you read it. You have to read it a few times to really appreciate the complexity of it all. If you don't read Countdown, there will be quite a few things that won't make sense unless you read Countdown first. If you don't want to spend the money on a 52 issue story, I suggest just reading the wiki for it. There are some good parts in it, but overall the story is REALLY lame. Also, I suggest picking up Final Crisis: Superman Beyond (3D), which is a 2 part Final Crisis tie-in that will help you understand the final issue of FC.

(With that the order would be: Countdown -> Final Crisis 1-6 -> Superman Beyond -> Final Crisis 7)

Don't read Countdown, but do read Final Crisis.

Superman Beyond is collected in the Final Crisis trade and don't get Death of the New Gods either.
