I have recently been reading "The Law Of Superheroes"( Gotham Books, 2013) written by two practising attorneys and have been thinking about the issues raised by the book.
Given that several heroes and heroines( Superman, Spider Woman II but significantly enough NOT Batman or Spider-Man, Daredevil or Moon Knight- a cynic would that both the Dark Knight and MK are independently wealthy in their "civilian identities" and need no further enrichment) in both the Marvel and DC universes supplement their income by collecting bounties on wanted criminals
(both supervillains and "ordinary criminals"), is this ethical or right?
To my mind, we should ask what status superheroes/heroines have in the eyes of the law, esp in post Civil War America, now that registered heroes under the SHRA are virtually deputized- private citizens can collect bounties( see Robert De Niro's Jack Walsh in "Midnight Run" and "Dog:The Bounty Hunter) but NOT professional law enforcement officers(whether local cops or Federal agents).
True, Superman donates the bounties he receives for capturing criminals to charity( he can hardly spend it as Clark Kent since living above your means always attracts attention), but the implication of corruption is always a matter of concern( has nobody EVER thought of offering the Man Of Steel a bribe to let him go)?
Anybody think as I do?
