I nominate Cyborg
Saddest Becoming a hero origin story
Bucky Barnes
- Orphaned as a kid
- Blown up in WW2
- Brainwashed by the Soviets to become an assassin.
- Killed many in his time as the Winter Soldier including Wolverine's wife, Jack Monroe, and blew up part of Philadelphia.
- Forced to live with all the memories of all the assassinations that he performed.
- Like Steve, he is a man out of time and has very few friends and family left. His sister has Alzheimers.
Martian Manhunter. Betrayed by your best friend and younger brother than having your entire race including your wife and daughter burn to death in front of you is pretty screwed up.

Hands down
Damn right. I shed a manly tear the first time I read his origin.

Don't bring up that poor kitty!
Spider-man
Jessica Jones (maybe not the saddest in general sense but definitely one of the most screwed up)
Frank Castle
Cyborg
Taskmaster (if you're including those borderline heros).

in which issue do you get to see Dex-Starr's origin?
Green Lantern 55
Iron Fist
Getting forced to go some crazy trek across the Himalayas to look for a mystical city then watching as his dad's best friend kills his dad and a pack of wolves rips apart his mother.
*double take*
wait....no one has said Batman?
*checks sky for pigs*
but people always say batman, even if it doesn't apply, AND THIS TIME IT DOES
@bierschneeman: Batman's origin isn't that sad
@bierschneeman: Batman's origin isn't that sad
that wasn't my choice, I was just expressing my shock.
though having your parents murdered in front of you is pretty sad, (wait, Batmans origin is just as sad as Iron Fists....)
both sadder than some of the others mentioned, like Bucky...
if I had to pick, id say Dex-Starr
Silver Surfer's story is quite sad considering unlike us the power means next to nothing to him. Would you really trade never seeing your family or the ones you love for cold space forever. It's not like he is made a slave on his planet and never get to see his people again, he is being made a slave away from his planet.
If you watch old space movies like 2001 a space odyssey or the quite new moon movie, being alone in space is torture. Spawns story is also sad although personally I don't think it's quite as sad. Having his girl friend taken by his best friend and being trapped in demon form as an outcast. At least he could talk to people on earth and do whatever he wanted.
Surfer's punishment is a lot like a mix of slavery and solitary confinement.
@jonny_anonymous: exactly why isn't that sad to see your parents die in front of your eyes, just because some f*cker wanted money?
I think that the origins of most Robins are incredibly sad -except for Tim- BUT... after seeing that page of the Kitty Red Lantern... Man, something went straight to my eye!
@nahuel: Well Bruces parents were just shot but Iron Fist's parent's were shot, pushed of a mountain and ripped apart by wolves while he was left alone in a mountainous wilderness.

It's sad but not that sad compared to some character origins.
@jonny_anonymous: It's not about comparisons, just about what you lose. I mean, it's terrible what happened to iron fist, but that doesn't mean that Batman's origin is less sad. He had everything, could have become the king of the world, but lost everything that terrible night because of no reason.
Iron fist's origin is messed up and brutal and sad, and seeing it in that perspective, you are completely right; but Bruce's story isn't less sad for lack of brutality.
@nahuel: It is about comparison though otherwise nobody would be able to answer this question
Wow this.
@jonny_anonymous: well, for me is not about comparisons, instead of being able to put myself in the shoes of the character and think "Maaaaaaaaaan... I wouldn't recover from that! And even less I would become a hero in any way!"
But... I wanna know more sad origin stories!
Cheers!
Hulk had everything a fiance a high paid military job & a bright future in ground breaking technology
Then he became a rampaging monster hunted hated & blamed by every one for everything
