He asked how they would have approached superman or handled zod. Not how they would have fought zod himself. Lol I don't think anyone read the question all the way through.
I don't see how they would have known about Zod any sooner than the military. They spotted Zod's ship as soon as it was in their orbit. Zod's ship teleports so they would not have seen it coming till it was already there. But let's ask.
