800 million. It is being released in March. And I think it will be viewed as being too dark.

    $1.7 Billion is reasonable.

TDK and TDKR grossed $1.05 Billion and $1.08 billion without the use of 3D. I can only imagine that with the name 'Batman' in the title and 3D, it can gross more.

I hate 3D :( But it does bring in more viewers.

It may be dark but it'll have heavy marketing on the toy line.

I'm going to say... 1.5 Billion.

    *EDIT*

I'm going to change my prediction. I will say that BvS will gross 1.2 billion.

Why under the billion? TDK and TDKR grossed past the 1 billion mark. Batman vs Superman has the benefit of:

    • Steam from Nolan films
    • Batman in the title
    • The concept of Batman AND Superman in the same film will draw people in
    • 3D

    Pretty sure it does.

The younger kids opt for 3D, no matter how meaningless it often is (in my opinion, 3D is only good/great for films fully intended for 3D).

I think it depends on the film. Movies like Avatar, TRON or Pacific Rim that have these larger than life visuals get good money from 3d tix and IMAX but I don't really see a movie like BvS benefiting from it that much.

Some people go see 3D so that they can see it in IMAX. I have a buddy who sees EVERYTHING in Imax. Even if it is 3D. He claims it's worth it.

I honestly think Digital IMAX is much better. But IMAX 3D can be deceptively useful for gaining $

Oh it's wayyyy better. Trust me, I don't think you'll find someone that hates 3D more than me. But generally, if a film offers 3D, there isn't a digital IMAX option. That's why I love Chris Nolan so much. He understands that 3D can detract from the viewing experience.

Lots of these predictions seem extremely high for a movie with mixed and indifferent public opinion, and no trailer.

I think 800 million is a solid number at this point in time. There is no reason to believe Batman vs Superman will be a billion dollar movie or doing Avengers numbers. It has a bad, non-summer release date and it's long-term revenue will be killed off by Captain America and X-Men.

True. I just don't know if the 3d/IMAX hype is as strong as it was 3-4 years ago. BvS will make bank off the title alone, and I'm sure 3d/IMAX tix will sell for it, but it just seems like (and I could be wrong) that most people will settle for standard showings unless it's a film that gets complemented by veiwing it in 3d/IMAX (i.e..Episode VII, TRON, Avatar etc.)

@eyedcyou: I love that he was against 3D and opted for IMAX. Really enhanced the visuals (which created more benefits). Interstellar I think is being shot in Digital IMAX, I wish more films were made for IMAX but I guess it doesn't rake in the money 3D does.

I'm not sure how good it will be, we know next to nothing about it. Only negatives for me are that Gadot is a terrible actress and Jesse Eisenberg is a mediocre one, but they are secondary components for this film.

If it's bad I still think it will scrape a billion, about 1.1. If it's good, about 1.4 billion, if it's amazing and has a great advertising campaign maybe 1.8 billion?

Transformers had a huge hype machine from the moment it was announced, and it is also a property that does not have to deliver quality to satisfy people. Six out of the 19 billion dollar movies aren't good, but many of them are sequels or had insanely high quality marketing to create positive hype.

    Yeah....no

This isn't comics we're talking about. Captain America is already proven to be a bigger box office draw than Superman and all but the last two uber hyped (and lived up to their hype) Batman movies. There's a reason why Warner Bros. moved their release date to avoid having to directly compete with Captain America 3. The reception for Winter Soldier was overwhelmingly positive which carries into the next movie, along with benefits from the hype machine that Avengers helps create. Iron Man didn't break the billion mark until after Avengers, keep that in mind.

I also didn't say Cap would beat the film, even though it very well could. It comes out later, and will have it's own hype to go with it that will keep people from repeat viewing BvS in theaters which has a lot to do with a movie making box office history.

True, but BvS has a ton of hype as well. The movie doesn't come out for over a year, so once it gets closer and we get trailers and what not, you'll see how much more the hype will grow.

It has a completely regular level of movie buzz right now, which is low for a superhero movie.

    How?

It already has more buzz than Avengers 2.

Mixed leaning toward negative opinions on the internet due to casting and carry-over mixed/negative reception from Man of Steel. General public perception seems to be indifferent about it because it's not Nolan Batman and that's how people are early on with reboots/recasting. The positive buzz it has right now is pretty much just people being hopeful. Avengers 2 has different buzz because being a billion dollar sequel, the movie has a lot more buzz in the real world than the internet. I know I'm going to see Avengers 2. I know I'm going to buy a ticket. I don't feel any need to talk about it on the internet or wonder if it will be good or not, because I'm seeing it already based on what the previous movies/universe has delivered on, and I'm not the only one. BvS doesn't have that luxury.

It's going to be the highest grossing film of all time. Even after being adjusted for inflation. So whatever that is.

Seriously doubt that, but it's definitely going to gross at least 1 billion.

Avengers took 3rd place with 1.5 bil and it's not nearly as popular as Batman or Superman.

The Avengers as a whole are more popular then both Superman and batman (at least at the boxoffice), one could even argue Iron Man's more popular (at the boxoffice) since Iron Man 3 outgrossed Batman Begins, TDK, TDKR, and MoS. I don't doubt BvS will out gross Avengers, and maybe it will even out gross Avengers 2, but i just don't see it making more than 2.7 billion.

@matthewparker: The Avengers is not more popular. The TDK trilogy had no 3D; whereas Iron Man did.

Placing Batman and Superman, two of the most iconic characters in the SAME film is a milestone, opposed to having them individual. There needn't even be a buildup (as Avengers had). People who have no interest in comic books or perhaps even comic book movies will watch it solely because two of the most iconic fictional characters will share screen time in a live action film.

I don't see why not. Dawn of Justice will apparently also have 3D, which will boost its gross.

What planet are you living on? The best Batman movies of all time were marketed better than Avengers, one of them is better than Avengers, and Avengers still outgrossed them.

and yeah, the first captain did sooo much better than mos (ca:tfa=$370 mil, mos=$668 mil)

oh wait, worldwide, supes first movie almost doubled caps first movie

Man of Steel should have grossed more than Cap's first movie just based on the situations around their release.

    Yes, it was.

3D is a profit boost, but it's not a 500 thousand dollar profit boost. TDK movies were also shown in IMAX.

Well we will see, at this point all we can do is speculate. I'm sticking with my earlier statement that it won't gross more than 2.7 billion.

You should build up to your emotional extremes in order to avoid looking like a lunatic. This was not a discussion about quality, speedy. This was only about money. Avengers has never been as popular as Batman or Superman. This is the first time both of these iconic characters are going to be... assembled in one big-budget film. I would bet you your next anger-management counseling session that Dawn of Justice is going to kill Avengers' gross.

    MoS isn't superman's first movie...
