What I always thought about, is what they're going to do AFTER they die. I mean say, Spidey dies. If nobody takes up the mantle, his smarter villains could easily piece together that Spider-man = Peter Parker and target his family and friends and make THEM pay for all of those years of getting pounded by Peter. So what should be on their will is a request to find someone to take up their mantle.
