Can somebody please help me with diversifying my pull list? It's all Marvel/DC heroes and I need something new.

I'm thinking about reading Walking dead now. Can anyone tell me a good jumping on point?

I'm also interested in maybe a military type book too.

Even a book with ordinary peeps living their lives kinda like the show Friends would also be cool.

Thanks in advance.

SO FAR I'VE BEEN RECOMMENDED:

American Vampire

Archie

Fables.

From Hell

Morning Glories

Preacher

RED

Sandman

Sweet Tooth

Transmetropolitan

Unknown Soldier

War Is Hell: The First Flight of Phantom Eagle

War Stories

Y: The Last Man

@Hawkeye446:

Thanks! Is this still ongoing? if so, do you know a recent jumping on point?

@The Stegman:

YES! People always recommend this book to me but I never had time before. I'll definitely check into it now though.

Do you guys know anything about what I originally asked for though? lol

@JairamGanpat: It is still ongoing. However, I would suggest going back to the beginning and collecting it in trades.

Yup on Fables and Y: The Last Man. I'm also keen on American Vampire, Sweet Tooth and Morning Glories among other contemporaries... there are a host of interesting non-hero books that've concluded that are eventual must reads... and the fun thing is that there are so many different avenues out there that've been pursued... go crazy on 'em.

RE: Fables jumping on point... truthfully, the best experience would be yielded by starting from the beginning... you'll be about 16 volumes behind the current storyline... but it is truly worth it. If I could have 16 new volumes of Fables in front of me right now I'd be more than delighted. It is admittedly pretty accessible right now, as one major arc has concluded and is diving into a new one... but again, I can't stress the potential value of starting from the beginning.

Books in general or just graphic novels and such?

If books are included, I highly recommend George RR Martins A Song of Ice and Fire series....

Military type books? Hm, i would probably recommend Garth Ennis' work that involves the military, of which there are quite a few (Unknown Soldier, War Stories, War Is Hell: The First Flight of Phantom Eagle and Battlefields). Ennis really knows his stf when it comes to military history and real world procedure. Would also recommend his run on Punisher and his groundbreaking series Preacher, both of which can have moments of extreme violence but which are also master classes in how to write comics. you want character interaction and people sitting round shooting the shit in hilarious fashion? Preacher is the one for ya (if you like your obscenities colourful, that is).

Another book with a whole lot of hilarious sitting round and talking is an indie called Holy Crullers. It's near impossible to get as it was only available through mail order and at conventions, but Image reprinted a bunch of them with new art in 2004 under the name Common Grounds. It's about a bunch of failed superheroes sitting round and talking. That's pretty much all that happens. Funny stuff. Hate from Fantagraphics was pretty brilliantly funny too.

Hope that helps and let me know if there are any other types of comics i can recommend.

If you want to start reading the Walking Dead, you should start from the beginning.
Your link to Unknown Soldier goes to the character. Which series are you referring to? Theminior theongoingof another Unknown Soldier?
Out of your list I would recommend these:

  • American Vampire
  • Fables
  • From Hell (not really a long series, you can it get it in one collection)
  • Preacher
  • Sandman
  • Sweet Tooth
  • Transmetropolitan
  • Unknown Soldier (the 08 series)
  • Y: The Last Man

I really love 30 Days of Night myself. It's one of my most favorite series, and since you've already been recommended Fables (second this, heartily!), I recommend 30 Days of Night lol. I really like Hack/Slash too, and you might like Casanova which is by Matt Fraction (it's quite weird, but interesting), or maybe Singularity 7, Wormwood Gentleman Corpse, Human Target... I don't know if you'd be into video game based comics, but they're my guilty pleasures lmao, and if you're interested, Dead Space, Uncharted, InFamous (*has a superhero), Prototype (*has an antihero superhero), Deus Ex, and my personal favorites: Mass Effect and Tomb Raider. I'm not sure if you'd be into any of those, but I figure I'd recommend them just in case! lol

Hitman...man. If you like Garth Ennis it might be his best work. It's not incredibly over the top or out of left field, but it's super solid. Pretty much self contained but here and now DCU characters show up. One of the top books I'd recommend.
