Most of the American comic industry is dominated by capes and tights. While there's a lot of great stuff out there, there's also a lot of other great non-super hero comics to be found.
Here are some that I've really enjoyed and why.
Fables
Fables, from DC's Vertigo imprint, takes many of the classic fairy tale characters from your childhood (and some from other oral traditions) and throws them into our world. The homeworlds the Fables has been invaded by "The Adversary", driving them to hide a magically cloaked borough in New York of their own creation. The first couple storylines feature a murder mystery and a bloody civil war, and the book ultimately turns into a cloak and dagger war between the Fables and the Adversary. Give it a try.
The Unwritten
Another Vertigo book, The Unwritten follows Tommy (Tom) Taylor, the son of an author who has written a best-selling series of books about a JK Rowling esque child wizard named...Tommy Taylor. Tom struggles with fans, detractors, and zealots who believe that he just may be the fictional Tommy Taylor, sprung from the written page into our world. Gritty and thoughtful, this book is a meditation on literature's impact on the culture. Some of the most powerful stories veer away from Tommy and his friends to follow the actions of a cabal that has worked through history to hide or eliminate authors who have tried to impact the world. If you're not hooked after the first trade...I don't know.
Some other Non-Cape books that I may write up later, that I highly reccomend:
Pride of Baghdad, Planetary, Morning Glories, Parker: The Hunter
