Hello, I am a newbie - not only to this forum, but also to the great kingdom of nerdihood (meant in a non-derrogitory, admiring kind of way, so please take it as a compliment).
My question is, if you had the ability to travel to any other reality - as yourself - which superhero's powers would you choose to inherit; if you wanted to be the greatest force for 'good' in all other realities you visit?
This means that the abilty would have to be plausibly achieved by being subjected to the same life altering event that the superhero/villain experiences, and are not relient on DNA/ coming from a different planet/ innate ability etc. I only got into comic books, scifi, video games (esp RPGs) etc in the last 8 years (mid 20s, exGF moved in with xbox, PS2 and lots of comics), but now am a big fan. So, I do realise that most people here have a much greater understanding and knowledge of superhero 'canon' and comic book realities.
Although I had seen films like spawn (which I was more of a fan of the soundtrack - - and had liked the comic along with tank girl and the few 2000AD comics I bought as a teenager up until then), it was not until the 1st spiderman movie, and having just swapped careers from being a chef to studying science (and loving physics, and the idea of infinite parallel universes) - that I started to ponder the fantasy of becoming a superperson and 'saving the day'. I know, slightly embarrising.
So, if you could be bitten by the spider (after Mr Parker - although he's not that powerful it is where the idea started), be subjected to the Intrinsic Field Subtractor Dr. Osterman encountered (yes, I know many people dislike Dr Manhattan... but imagine, you could stop the imbalance of power that was the real 'villain' in watchmen), or the experimental particles experienced by Owen Reece, or any other similar scenario... which one/ combination would you choose... and which would there be problems with?
I could see incompatabe DNA, and the mystical side of spideys powers in later (unread by me) comics being a problem with spidey. I could see not having quite the intellect and methodical mind of Osterman being a possible (though not entirely unavoidable) problem for becoming a Dr Manhattan replacement - as well as becoming a fatalist/losing the want/ will/ power to create change; I could see Molecule Man's succeptability to aging and psychic attack (please correct me if wrong) being a problem there.
My main problem now, is that any time I watch/ read scifi, horror and fiction or play a RPG, I imagine an alternate me- with a superhero's powers - saving the day (I've become a megalomaniac). I keep having to refer to sites like this to determine exactly how powerful/ weak these superheroes would be in comparison to the adverseries and advertisies in stories I get involved with.Oh yeah, I might be a bit drunk as well, so apologies for any spelling and logic mistakes (apart from the glaring IT IS FICTION, aint gonna happen Nick one).
I look forward to your response from a very chilly Melbourne.
Thanks, Nick
