In your opinion, what is the most annoying/frustrating retcon in comics? Could be a character you loved, a storyline, an origin story, etc.
Most Frustrating Retcon Ever
@sacredweapons: Does the good out way the bad?
@legacy6364: Well its to early to tell but most everyone says no.
The Evil That Men Do was pretty terrible.
+1 on that, and on new 52. To elaborate on nu52, I'd say it's that most of it is garbage, and the good stuff is good because it could have been a good story no matter what. No change made in my opinion was worth the overhaul, when good stories like Rotworld, Court of Owls and the entire run of Batwoman under Williams ignored that anything had changed. Demon Knight and I, Vampire, two of my favourite series that sort of dropped off after a while, both needed no new fresh world to tell them, but sadly would not have been told without the restructure.
But what is worst is the new 52's attempts at "diversification". They felt a prominent gay character was needed, so they did the cop-out of making Alan "not the real Green Lantern" Scott (a favourite character of mine) gay, in the process eliminating a gay character (his son)! Scandal Savage of the Secret Six no longer exists, characters from Checkmate like Jessica Midnight and Thomas Jagger are gone. The cast of the story becomes massively white-washed for the sake of streamlining, but the attempts at diversity after the fact are token at best.
New-52 takes the cake due to how much it's changed
Though One More Day, Xorneto, Gwen Stacy has children with Norman Osborn, Rape retcons, and Cassandra Cain's switch to evil all really sucked for me. Jean Grey's turn into Dark Phoenix being changed into not being her made the story lose a lot of it's impact and tragedy (also the Phoenix Force is stupid)
I could list a crap load of things that happened in the new 52, like Mr freezes origin, or superman in general, but I'm just going to sum it up with: THE NEW 52 which doesn't even have 52 titles. Way to go DC
One More Day is the worst...
Flash's origin is probably the most frustrating because I like the idea of Professor Zoom going back and changing Barry's history (by killing his Mom). I think that that is a better way to retcon something than just writing it out of existence and it really shows just how evil and great Zoom is...
However, I miss when Barry was just doing this because he's a good guy. Not because he has a really typical origin story.
One More Day. And whatever happened with Gwen Stacy having sex & kids with Norman Osborn (haven't read it, but I don't feel like I need to to hate it).
I would list some things in the New 52, but I don't hate everything from it so I'd have to go into a list of what I don't like, and I've honestly stopped caring.
New-52.
superman and the new 52
@sacredweapons: I find it odd that out of all the good stuff in N52, you mention Rhato.
Beata
Birthing Pod.
All of the new Star Wars Disney canon.
And this
One more day
new spectre origin
gwen stacy and norman osborn children
Alan Scott being gay
the worst of all is the new star wars canon (alot of stories that i liked may not be canon anymore sigh)
DC Universe rebooting their whole universe.
The worst.
It was so bad that I haven't touched a single DC Comic or tie-in product since then.
New-52.
@sacredweapons: Does the good out way the bad?
yes
For DC, probably N52, LOL. Not sure about Marvel, really.
For Star Wars - the Legacy era, varying aspects of TOR, TFU I and II, an parts of TCW.
Joker removing his face. Loved it at first but now I am just thinking what the hell are they going to do now. Will he just be a big scabby pus filled face now.
Sinestro back in The Green Lantern Corps, I know it wasn't permanent but come on it's Sinestro.
@awesomeperson: to be honest I don't even know it is anymore it's been retconned so much.
@spidey_jackson: well its one of my favorite things coming out of dc. Or was I have 31 havent read yet. And its way better than red beast boy.
@jedixman: It wasn't really a retcon because it technically was never canon now don't get all mad at me I love the eu and thought it was canon but I have quotes I can pull up of people who said it was never canon for example.
Star Wars.com was interviewing Mark Waid for the upcoming Star Wars marvel comic and it quotes "But This is really the first time for Star Wars that comic book series are going to be canonical, so it's a pretty huge deal."
