Elseworlds. They tend to be more fanciful and imaginative rather than the REALLY continuity heavy What Ifs?, that often revolve around things like What if Jean Gray Didn't Die and Then Married Cyclops, and Then Skrull Invasion...
In other words, very hard on new readers.
I haven't really read Marvel's stuff, but I get the feeling that character origin is more important to DC stories than to Marvel stories, for the most part. So there's more to play with on that front.
depends on the issue really some are awesome, some suck and most fall somewhere in between.
Dc wins because of one utter masterpiece,
Kingdom Come.
DC's Elseworlds. They put a LOT of thought into those, and Kingdom Come and Red Son are two of my favorite comic book story arcs of all time.
The only Marvel Elseworlds story I really liked was Old Man Logan, but it wasn't as good as the two I've already mentioned.
I prefer Elseworlds. Instead of rewriting the same events with minor changes, they create completely new worlds.
What if's main focus is showing what might ave happened but elseworlds does that but focus's more on telling a good story as well.
Elseworlds are usually better, but I love What-Ifs. Well, I love the What Ifs that make huge changes but I hate the stupid What Ifs where nothing happens.
A little Gotham by gaslight and Red Rain seal the deal.
Elseworlds.
OOOhhhh, good topic!!! I am a huge fan of Marvel What if's? but I agree that DC Elseworlds are of a higher class (more unique, intricate stories, better artwork and well written, etc...) and just all around a better product. One of my favorite : JSA the libert file and The Unholy Three. Sheer genius, anbody else know what i mean? Comments? Ans, yes.....Red Rain was amazing, as well as Gotham by gaslight. I also am fond of : Superboy's Legion and JLA the Nail.

thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis
I'm leaning towards Marvel's What If...?
That includes Age of Apocalypse, right?
Marvel seems to use alternate universes more than DC.
@primepower53: Kingdom Come! Harrumph!
I like Elseworlds more. They tend to not only be fun and creative but some also have a much deeper messege. The Nail for example is the best one in my opinion.
For want of a Superman, the League was lost
For want of the League, the battle was lost
For want of a battle, justice was lost
For want of justice, the world was lost
All of the want of a Superman
