Marvel Announces All-Female Avengers, "A-FORCE"

Back in September, Marvel announced on The View that a new person would wield the hammer of Mjolnir, and she would become the new Thor. Marvel recently announced there will be another announcement on The View. However, said announcement never actually happened. Today, Marvel announced a new book that will shake things up.

The May debut of A-FORCE, which will be a part of the larger SECRET WARS event, will feature fan favorite female characters, coming together to fight evil. The team will feature characters like She-Hulk, Medusa, Dazzler, Nico Minoru, and more.

Within the Warzones! of Secret Wars, a brand new team will lead the way. A-Force Assemble! Marvel Comics reimagines the Marvel Universe in one of the largest shake-ups to the Avengers mythos.

The series will be written by G Willow Wilson and Marguerite Bennett and will feature the art of Jorge Molina.

In addition, this part of Battleworld, named Arcadia, will feature a new character named Singularity created by Wilson.

A-FORCE will be the 15th female led book at Marvel and sits on the shelves next to other on-going female led series like UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL-GIRL, CAPTAIN MARVEL, MS MARVEL, THOR and ANGELA: ASGARD'S ASSASSIN.

Having She-Hulk front and center must be a nice surprise for the crowd disappointed about her series ending. Really hoping Elektra gets some love in this title.

I am totally, totally, totally in favor of a book that focuses on Marvel's female characters, of which there are many great ones. And Wilson is doing great on Ms. Marvel.

But that name kind of sucks. It just makes me immediately think "A-Hole."

Kind of anticlimactic after the hype and the DC news.

Nothing groundbreaking then, but it's nice to see all these female characters get a push.

I have no problem with any of this. In fact, I'm pumped for it.

I'm used to Marvel riffing with their own team name books now. I'm just glad it doesn't have "All-New" or "Uncanny" in the title.

No female Thor is kind of weird.

It's fine to make an all-male book, but it's not news. We've had all male teams for... well, almost forever.

Also, many female characters in the past were just around for eye candy (see... the 90s).

Comics are embracing the fact that there's growing female readership and catering to what they thing they'll want nothing wrong with that.

The industry needs to make changes or it will die. We aren't getting the new reader numbers to sustain the business without stuff like this

mat dude thats not true... theres was almost always a female incorporated in a team, and the ratio always became more even and even with time. but now, its become the other way. it went from one sided - to neutral - back to one sided.

Not trolling, but every announcement Marvel makes about Secret War is making me less and less interested in continuing in with them. Wilson being the go to female writer seems forced too, her actual speaking presence at panels has been less than inspiring for me personally. If the writer is so about woman power she should really do some research about the characters she writes and stand up to being their poster-woman for diversity, and demand a non-female centric book. Money talks though.

Having a big hoopla over this announcement was silly to me, it won't last past SW unless they wipe out all the men permanently...#tryingtohard.

Glad to see She-hulk in the lead though and some lesser used female characters. Too bad one of my favorite artists got saddled with the writer though, guess I will have to get my art from Tumblr.

@inferiorego: dude, thats one example for 1940.. if you know anything about american history then its clear why no women/minorities were on the 1st superhero team ever. But you brought up the 90s.. im pretty sure most 90 teams had females, and im pretty sure they played a bigger role than just 'eye candy' - which is gross. and as i said, with time... the male to female ratio always became more even and even.. but now its just going to the other side, which is just as sexist. we now have 2 marvel titles that feature a 100% female roster... why is there no teams with 100% male roster??

So long as the writing is good, I'm down for this.

And Monica Rambeau/Photon/Pulsar/etc., plus Jubilee with Fireworks, Firestar, Dazzler, Aurora, and other characters that frequently get ignored. I'm sad that Magik, Moonstar, and Polaris didn't make the cut but it's possible that they couldn't fit all of the characters on one cover.

I'm happy, but it's most likely a time warp pulling the characters together from different eras considering the costumes. I don't see Invisible Woman, but I suppose she'd fight with her family, though she'd be a natural to help head up this team.

And to be fair, that's not "now," but it's more about reaching out to people to people not aware of comics and hoping they'll get some bites. Marvel is fishing for a new generation of readers.

I think a lot of the problem is that comic readers (not you, I like you) turn news into a racial or sex battleground, not realizing that these companies just want to branch out to new audiences. Is it pandering? Yep. But with the creative team attached, it has a really good chance of being solid. They don't do a all male team because it's not news and these companies already have a firm grasp on the wallets of men

There are, or at least there's one right now. New Avengers has featured an all-male team for 41 issues now.
