While I agree that Marvel heroes were created to do the whole relatable thing, and DC heroes to be paragons, I don't think that stands anymore.

Marvel heroes have changed the universe and went to new power levels too much to be just remembered by their flaws... except when those flaws are kept up with forceful narration (like "Parker's luck"...).

DC heroes went through the "edgy and grounded" phase, some of them are now exactly like Marvel heroes in terms of morality and choices.

Lol. This is the main difference, actually.

Shazam. The most accurate thing I've read in pages of this thread.

I didn't even realize that because I don't even look at the price when I get a book lol. I just buy what I want.

@batmanary: Or they picked the comic where batman beats darkseid or the one where superman bench presses the earth for 5 days or the fact that DC just has the worst writing right now. Like redhood and the outlaws is some of the worst shit I've ever read. Marvel just has better writing all around and is more realistic and relatable. Sure DC has good animation movies but that is all they have as far as I'm concerned. Ultimate Spider-man Miles Morales is some of the best shit I've ever read. DC just has those outrageously unrealistic comics that can't even stand. I don't know why DC has such grounded live action movies that you can relate to but terribly written comics

DC has a sense of class, and legacy. Marvel is like Coke without caffeine. In the truest sense, it's like Chevy vs Ford....no one should be giving a ***k

DC was originally just iconic in the strictest sense of the word, but as they've gone on, they feel that to wipe off the niceties, they need to make the world as dark as possible to balance it out by killing the heroes that are uncared for. Even though the Joker is the best villain in comics, he never wins, and like other DC villains, he is chained to his single arch-enemy in an endless struggle. DC's biggest flaw is they showboat the Justice League and leave everyone else hanging (Ted Kord who?).

On the other hand Marvel struggles with good plot. They can't kill anyone because of their fan followings (why the Ultimate U is great) but they also have to have tragedy. Marvel's biggest flaw is that they can't satisfy everyone with the comics, because in the end, heroes die.

DC have Demi gods and heroes which are role models and not relatable. Also, DC like to constantly reboot their comics, so it can sometimes be hard to follow. They are also a bit more dark and gritty compared to Marvel.

Marvel on the other hand, make heroes, few gods but the heroes are relatable. They show you how they handle their lives. They are more childish, if you want, than DC. Marvel likes continuity, so it can be easier to follow.

That's like a summary of the differences.

There is no difference.

Though my favorite hero is Ghost Rider, I only lean more towards DC because some of the best comics ever written live there, also including vertigo and wildstorm stuff (Planetary, Ex Machina). They reigned in and took chances on some great writers back in the day, alan moore, grant morrison, neil gaiman, etc...and produced some amazing stories.

Though current DC is pretty much crap. The only new book I bought and will follow is the Multiversity. And Marvel does have Warren Ellis lately and Brian Bendis, and Ed Brubaker (also wrote for DC) now.

There are differences but they are minor, The styles are always very different feeling. It doesn't matter what you read. If you read X-Men, Avengers ect.. it feels like a Marvel Book. Whereas when you read Batman, Superman or even some obscure titles like Swamp Thing it just feels like DC.

The biggest difference is everyone knows who Stan Lee is but there is no one in DC that fills that role.

Beside DC's godly characters, and Marvel being owned by Disney now, what are the main differences you guys notice? DC comics can get pretty confusing with all their multiverse stuff. While Marvel mostly does it in their Fantastic Four titles. I'm sure there's plenty other differences, but I'm just curious to know what you guys think.

is that seriously the only thing you can say when comparing marvel to DC?

DC has more magic stuff, and Marvel has more cosmic stuff. DC has better animated shows and TV series, Marvel has better movies. DC is more diverse than Marvel due to Vertigo and Wildstorm (the worst thing about he New 52 was to end Wildstorm by far). DC has better mature stories than Marvel due to Vertigo again. Marvel is more popular than DC nowadays. I only prefer DC, because of their old stories, Vertigo, and the magical universe, I only read Constantine, Swamp Thing, Animal Man and JLD from DC (I've also read Forever Evil) and I like the Green Lanterns, but I prefer to spend my money on some old Vertigo books.

DC is darker, use sidekicks. Characters are more relatable.

Marvel is lighter, no one seems to have a sidekick. Characters are more stereotypical.

heres what i think is the biggest difference: DC characters are more of a legendary, mythological feel; while Marvel's characters have stricter history and chronological epics.

for instance, you read a story for superman, batman, green latern, or wonder woman and most of the time it could honestly be anywhere in their timeline. not everytime, obviously they have some history, but almost anyone can pick up a batman book and you can expect him to be a single, rich man, working with alfred and going out into the night as batman to fight crime. it's a rare occasion that any of these things are different. and so he has more of a blurry history that can easily be moved or manipulated, but this can be a great thing because it leaves the story telling more open on some levels and gives him a solid, easy understanding for almost anyone to come in. it also provides an easy acceptance of details changing or being used in different ways than expected, like snyder's court of owls story.

on the other hand, if you read a random spider-man story, there will almost always be large clues as to where in his timeline you are. whether he's married or not, who he's dating, where he lives, what costume he's wearing, whether he's in college or high school or working, etc etc all point to where you are in the overall spider-man epic. there's no blurry history because everything is definite and established. it makes it a bit harder for new readers to come in and know everything, but it gives him a rich history that makes it fun to be apart of and invest in. there's more references to past stories, even stories that came out over 30 or 40 years ago, and it feels more like a long running television show or soap opera.

there are certainly exceptions on both sides, but for me it seems like most of the DC characters follow this type of pattern and most of the marvel characters have this strict timeline quality.

This is exactly how I always saw it. Great answer bro

DC is more fantasy and Marvel is more grounded in reality.

Sure... Ghost Rider, Hulk, Deadpool, Thor, Silver Surfer, Spiderman, Sentry, Ant-man, Luke Cage, Fantastic Four, X-men, Loki, Galactus, Thanos, etc. are all highly realistic...

And the Bat-family, Watchmen (except Dr. Manhattan of course), Green Arrow, Arsenal, Connor Hawke, Richard Dragon, Bronze Tiger, Lady Shiva, etc. are all fantasy...

Saying Marvel is more grounded in reality is complete BS.

Agreed. I don't get when people say that Marvel characters were realistic and had flaws where DC heroes are perfect. It was true back in the early days but not anymore.

Agreed

@darthshap: @the_poet: DC has like 6 great heroes. Marvel has a million. That's why Marvel was nick named the "house of ideas". DC is Batman Mon-Friday than Superman Sat-Sunday. You can throw a rock into a crowd of Marvel characters who ever it hits will be good enough to start a franchise. With DC you just wasted a perfectly good rock.

Marvel is also more grouneded. DC is all over the place.

Both companies are way more similar than people would admit but DC is so Batman/Supes centered everyone else is treated as B Listers.

Marvel uses more gimmickry to sell books but they're consistently good and they take more chances on lesser known characters and they adhere more to their continuity.

Marvel fans are more casual and SOME DC fans take themselves WAY too serious with all the iconic talk.

The biggest difference between Marvel and Marvel:

1. powerhouses rarely sandbag in Marvel. Superman, WW, Flash, and the other powerhouses in DC are mostly dealing with human level opponents. Marvel powerhouses usually deal with cosmic and abstract level opposition. The biggest difference is a result of this.

2. Humans in Marvel are actually able to take care of themselves. Human beings in DC are either helpless idiots, helpless bystanders, intelligent villains, intelligent buffoons, or clowns that think that spending billions of dollars and decades of training can actually help people in a meaningful way.

Humans in DC need superhuman s be a use they are incapable of cleaning up their own messes or dealing with their own problems.

If you want a reason that DC has continued to lose market share...there it is.

Okay I know this debate has been going on for years now, but I still have a solution:

Say you piled l these characters into one universe, what would separate them? Answer: their ideals, their philosophies, what they put first in life. What's the difference between a police officer and a black ops guy? One goes home at the end of the day and puts the idea of work to rest while the other thinks of nothing but the cause he's fighting for.

Hence, DC and Marvel's heroes since their incarnation into story have always been divided by two different ways to write a story: what people wish they would be like and what people feel they are like and can be more like. DC has heroes that were only later in their time more fleshed out in writing, while Marvel starts off with the faces of regular people that soon become heroes. Both sides have exceptions, but that's the basics.

In the end, most Marvel heroes will be that policeman who goes home at the end of the day to not think about work but the rest of his life as it is, while DC has mostly heroes that are devote disciples for the cause of justice, ensuring the world of protection as much as can be.

Not too much overall difference, except that a lot of DC seems geared toward older audiences generally speaking, and DC also has made their characters like Superman in a darker context than what they used to be.

Marvel is like Call of Duty, casual for the sake of casual and everyone exists as a extension of real life procedures in fighting the good fight

DC is like a MGS, it's a fantasy simulator that doesn't take itself serious and is too damn outlandish but it can be serious and dramatic.

Marvel is more relatable and realistic as most people agree but DC is better if your like me and your more into science fiction. DC first got my attention at age 13 with stories like Knightfall, Emerald Twilight and Death of Superman. In the 90s DC was a brutal place which gave a real emphasis on the mortality of even "demi-gods". But now DC's continuity is a complete MESS and it has been plagued by many unneccessary retcons that usually dumbs down it's characters (Superboy, Hal Jordan and Barry Alan for example) but DC is fun and i personally like over powered superheroes and it's multiverse stories. I also really liked the Wildstorm Universe being that i'm a big Mr. Majestic fan. I'm not a fan of the New 52 at all so i've gone back to being a Marvel fan for the first time since 1994. But Marvel's depiction of the X-Men and Avengers are usually pretty flawless. Marvel is also more diverse than DC and is great at breaking down diverse issues such as race and gender.
