Looking for recommendations on darker stories

I really love reading darker stories like the current Batman, Aquaman and X-Force, and was wondering what current or past titles (DC and Marvel only please) you would recommend reading? I just started Iron Man - Extremis, as I heard its a pretty messed up book.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Extremis dark? I wouldn't say that. I enjoyed it but I wouldn't call it dark.

I recommend Sandman. It's Vertigo / DC (with cameos from Batman, Martian Manhunter, Mister Miracle, and others)

Dark Batman stuff = The Black Mirror, The Killing Joke, Year One, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, The Black Glove, Batman RIP.

@xAnimosity: Maybe Hitman? Aztek? They ARE mainstream DC titles, just a little off the beaten path.

Read that and it was very good.

Marvels MAX series, particularly Punisher Max are all dark and full of adult content.
