James Gunn as director of new Shazam movie

I don't want another Dark Knight when dealing with Shazam, not every character has to be dark/realistic/gritty.

He seems like he likes the character so why not, I liked GotG but like he said he can't because of his Marvel contract. I think Brad Bird or Lord and Miller would be great for either Shazam or Flash.

*pats on head* Don't you worry your perfectly combed head about it. DC isn't Marvel whose tone is the same for the majority of their movies.

Why do ya think that?

Super had a darker sense of humour than Guardians. When you look at all his work Gunn has a love of the trashier side of cinema and with his clear handle on visuals I think he'd be perfect to directing Sandman, I'd love to see his take on the serial killer convention in particular.
