Captain Cold was an actual threat to Flash and not just a poor man's Mr. Freeze. Now, thanks to Johns, it's back to the "good old days" of his dumb cold gun.
Isn't Captain Cold having a gun again stupid?
No, the guns were what made him different. Captain cold has been the most powerful ice based DC character for a while now, easily outclassing freeze.
@dratini1331: tell that to non-fans. They'll look at Cold and laugh
I actually think the gun is much better for him. He assembled and built the gun himself and supposedly mastered absolute zero showing just how crafty and intelligent he is. There was one scene in Forever Evil where Lex Luthor was saying something along the lines of, "You didn't even finish high school and you can build a cold gun?" and Black Manta was telling Cold how useless a cold gun would be.
Oh wrong Manta ended up being when Cold totally owned Johnny Quick
@daiohnysis: non-fans do that anyways. someone disliking a good character isn't my problem, it's theirs. I can easily justify the cold gun as a unique asset in a sea of people with the same powers. The gun is unique and is something that is a hallmark of DC's silver age Sci-Fi roots.
@dratini1331: I can tell that it was a silver age throwback. Why else would Johns bring that crap back?

Who cares what such ignorant people think?
The ONLY reason Cold was stripped of his powers is so Johns could pull of that lame trick in Forever Evil.
@jonny_anonymous: Hey! It wasn't lame...ok it was kind of lame, but still pretty badass at the same time. I was pretty cheering when I saw that happen.
@jonny_anonymous: exactly.
@daiohnysis: Because it's both more unique and more interesting than the whole "let's just shoot ice from his hands!" mechanic that pretty much everyone who as any power even remotely related to ice has?
I only recently started to read New 52 Flash last year but I liked Cold without a guy but then again I haven't read enough of Flash and his Rogues to have a better opinion on whether he should or shouldn't have a gun.
@jonny_anonymous: what was the trick?
Also, as overpowered as they continued to make flash, u want his rogues to be powerless jokes and losers?
@phoenixgeist: Having the gun automatically shoot Johnny Quicks leg and freeze it

How did the guns make him different from Mr. Freeze? Him having cold powers re-defined him as a character and made him less vulnerable.
Stupid? No. However, he is MUCH of a less threat than he is now to the Flash. However, Cold's character, unlike people like Bane or Joker, isn't interesting because he tries to beat the Flash, he is interesting because he is so different from the regular villain.
So, no matter if he is a lesser threat, he is still an amazing character.

@fragmentmind: Mr. Freeze came after captain cold for starters. Second off, it's fine to have 2 people with freeze guns, just like it's fine to have 2 people with heat rays. However, as I sad before, that large majority of people with ice powers just shoot ice generically from their bodies. Eg: Killer frost, Icicle, icicle junior, ice, and many others in DC alone. His cold gun is not only interesting in my opinion, it's something more unique to DC, and specifically him.
It's more unique than his original n52 design, and in my opinion a better story mechanic. The cold powers just made him another of the line up of [insert ice villain here]. The guns had their own backstory, and gave him character and abilities that other ice-base characters don't have. The cold guns took a dude who's just a normal crook, and made him into a leading expert in cryogenics.
Captain cold's guns define him and his character. Several of his character traits, such as his deep understanding of how their tech worked, and being able to vastly improve upon these are what made him the modern day character.

Except Mr Freeze
@jonny_anonymous: Already addressed that. Not only is Captain cold older than freeze, it's just them. By comparison, there's plenty of ice villains that shoot ice from their bodies in DC alone, let alone marvel and other comics.

It also actually makes sense that he would have powers because he was able to emanate subzero temperatures that would slow down Flash before he even reached him now he actually has to aim a gun and buy the time he lifts it he'll be in jail.
@jonny_anonymous: I disagree. The speed to lift and aim his arm to blast flash is basically the same as it would take for him to do the same with his cold gun. The gun also already emitted fields of absolute zero, so there's really no difference between the gun and the powers. The powers still require him to have them on all the time, and still require him to actually aim his arm at flash anyways.
The gun is just more unique and interesting than the powers IMO.
He is much more interesting with the gun. The look is great and a character is not made better just by being more powerful.
@dratini1331: didn't Joar Mahkent have cryogenic tech as well?
@hyperlight: eh, there are other people with freeze tech, just not nearly as many. It's mostly hyperbole when I'm saying that it's just mr. freeze and Captain cold. I can probably pretty easily find more than those two. However, it's still rarer to find cold tech/weaponry than the generic ice power set.
@dratini1331: very true
