Poll Is the Watchmen movie a (comic book movie) masterpiece? (57 votes)
I´ve read it several times.
No doubt about the novel but, do you think the movie is a masterpiece of the comic book movies?

No but it was pretty cool.
It was good, but I wouldn't dare call it a masterpiece. I respect that it attempted to remain true the tone and format of the graphic novel, but that attempt also resulted in some serious structure and pacing issues.
Really good movie, and relatively true to the book. One of my favorite comic books movies; IMO one of the best.
I wouldn't consider it a masterpiece of a movie, though.
Hard story to condense let alone adapt. He unfortunately failed at the adapting part as he mostly did a shot for shot comic book movie with only the ending and credit sequence being original. The credit sequence mostly points out the biggest flaw with it's greatness in that to do a written story justice on the big screen you need to take liberties using the film medium or else the story suffers.
You need to make a great film and not a great panel by panel replication of the book. I still love it thought it's just not in my top cbm list.
as a movie, not a comic book movie, considering the odds stacked against it, and how rock effing "duuuuuudemeister" DUMB Snyder is, is qualifies as a defacto masterpiece. Because the guy manning the helm is roughly equivalent to the bastard child of Michael Bay and Snooki, raised by Kathy Griffin off her face on party drugs provided from squealing twink-bots.
as a comicbook adaption movie, it is so-so.
I can kinda see why people have problems with it. It's to much story to fit into that time frame. It would have been easier to make a TV mini series about it. Then you could expand (or have just enough time) the Watchmen story.
No but it was pretty cool.
What do you mean 'true' cbm? Batman was a weak detective, didn't design any of his gadgets, Alfred had no specialized skills, the batmobile was a military tank, the suit was almost unrecognizable, Batman KILLED Two-Face intentionally, Joker wasn't permawhite, and Batman straight-up gives up when the movie ends. How many people died during those 8 years that he could have easily saved?
Now, I think TDK is not only one of the greatest CBM'S ever, it's one of the greatest films ever. But this was MORE of a true CBM than Iron Man, Than Superman: The Movie, than First Avenger?
That doesn't even make sense.
The movie has absolutely no reason to exist.
This. It's a diminished version of the comic series with a Zack Snyder aesthetic.
No, TDK is a masterpiece. But Watchmen is very good.
Never seen it, I heard it was mediocre at best. Apparently Alan Moore hates it, in fact he hates EVERY adaption of his works bar one from Batman the Animated Series.
As I understand it, Moore has not actually seen any of the film adaptations of his films, as he refuses to do so.

He hates a lot of things. He even said that if you like Grant MOrrison, don't read any of his (Alan Moore) stuff. He hates MOrrison's work.

Masterpiece is not a word that should be thrown around so lightly, as good as some CBMs have been, I wouldn't consider any of them out and out Masterpieces. The title of Masterpiece should be reserved for films that are truly a triumph of cinema. In its most confined sense, you could probably narrow down the list of films that are masterpieces down to about 50 - and that's of all films ever made. Watchmen does not even come close to being close.

I know, I know, but we´re talking about a Masterpiece of the cbm genre, not a masterpiece of the history of cinema.
But I get your point, I think that it depends on how we see those concepts.

That was it, thank you for clearing it up for me.
The Ultimate Cut is one of my top 5 CBM's.
It's good. But imo it could have only achieved masterpiece status if they had the giant (not really there) squid. I just recently started re-reading Watchmen and it got me thinking about how cool it would of been to see narly tentacles draped down the sides of the buildings. Plus the whole book really hinges on those images of the carnage the population took out on itself.
