Is Marvel NOW Marvel's answer to DC's New 52? (please explain)

Yes...and No.

I think Marvel recognized the success of the New 52, which was putting DC's name out there again as well as attracting new readers and wanted to do the same, HOWEVER they also recognized the flaws of having a company wide reboot, which is messing up continuity, making old fans upset, and the hard work of starting over from scratch, so they decided to not do that, and make a relaunch instead, which I think is a fantastic idea, a Relaunch can get just as many stories out as a reboot without messing up continuity and pissing off the fans. Good job Marvel!

I always thought New 52 was DC's answer to Heroic Age.

@The Stegman: What do you mean by Relaunch?

I kindof wish Marvel had the balls to do a true reboot. It seems like they do a relaunch every 2 to 3 years.

Heroic Age wasn't really a reboot/relaunch. It didn't bring a whole lot to the table other than bring back the (real) Avengers.

Kind of but not really since pretty much everything in canon now will still be part of the continuity

More like an attempt to one up DC.

@Swagger462:

Okay, a reboot is basically when a company decides to get rid of a lot of current titles and replace them with new ones, while also making significant changes to the universe, its characters and it's back stories, some characters stay, some go, some new ones are created. It's like starting fresh.

A relaunch, is when a company decides to get rid of a lot of current titles and replace them with new ones, but the universe doesn't necessarily change so greatly, usually the only thing that happen with relaunches is that team rosters change, but continuity stays the same.

@The Stegman: Oh I see, so all the current stories would be wrapping up their partnerships and whatnot right about now yes? I'm still relatively new to comics and so everything I buy is old TPB with the exception of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe (probably should have kept my money with that one...)

@Swagger462: I think Marvel NOW will probably be a direct result of all of the events that happened in Avengers vs X Men.

@The Stegman: Oh okay, well I should probably get on that then... Haha. Thanks for the info dude.

That's how I would put it.

It seems like it's what the New 52 was supposed to be, maybe. I've read a lot of interviews where creators at DC said much of their title was written "back when it was a relaunch and not a reboot". A relaunch as in a big creative shake-up and for many characters a change of direction, but keeping the old stories canon.

Is there a release calendar for Marvel NOW specifically?

Honestly the new 52 has more in common with the Ultimate Universe except they didn't decide to populate the DCNU with primarily sociopathic heroes and the DCNU sucks way less
