Is Kung Fu overused in Comics?

I mean it's okay for people like Batman, he needs it. But Superman? I mean isn't it getting old?

Everybody has some knowledge of how to fight, so when they get depowered they can be seen as badass. It more a question of who should know martial arts, not Kung Fu.

If you going to be a super hero you should probably know some martial arts, doesn't necessarily have to be kung fu though.

Martial arts helps you train your mind and body. Helps you discipline yourself. So if you're a superhero, you'll probably need to learn at least some form of martial arts.

Spider-Man too. I think it's horrible.

Especially for superheroes without super powers

The only thing that really annoys me is how it always seem to be Kung Fu or Karate when there are many different martial arts to choose from.

Not just that but people also only think of certain regions as having martial arts.

That's part of why I like Green Lantern so much. He knows very little, if any, martial arts, he's just a street fighter, and it works. Although, (and I hate it when this happens) there are several characters who've been noted for using various fighting styles, I just can't remember many. A few stand outs are: Originally Black Canary was just a Judo expert. Batman has CERTAINLY never been limited to Kung Fu, he's supposed to be a master of a variety of hand to hand systems. In Batman: Year One, Bruce noted that Selena Kyle (later to become Catwoman) "knew Karate, but only Karate". I see your point certainly, Kung Fu is wwwwaaayyy over used, but there are some out there who've, "gone against the crowd" and used other things. I might post more if I can remember them. Oh, I don't think the Punisher uses Kung Fu, or at least not JUST Kung Fu.

@spiderbat87: Would make sense, plus whatever they teach you in Marine Boot Camp and Force Recon School.

I enjoy it with street level characters. The world shatterers? Not so much.

Superman doesn't really know or utilize martial arts at all. Pre-52 was taught specific pressure points by Batman, but that's the extent.

Ya know a big part of this is probably cuz the artist don't want to sit at a martial arts book trying to figure out how to represent the difference between kicks and punches. . Really in comics a kicks a kick. Anyway most of the time in comics they are careful just to say 'mastered many forms.

#19 Posted by Rogan2112 (600 posts) - 1 year, 9 days ago - Show Bio

@Enosisik: True enough on the mastered many forms. To the lay person a "kick looks pretty much like any other kick", however, to people with any kind of extensive training that's not necessarily true. However, so far it really has never diminished my enjoyment of a comic (unless the artist sucks to begin with lol)
