I was at Borders Books this evening and naturally I made a b line for the comic history and bio books

No they didn't have my encyclopedia which for me is sad and alarming,

Anyways they did have a book on the evolution of the ghost rider.

So more out of bordom than anything else I grabed it an started reading

As I read a thought occured to me the ghost rider movie just came out a short while ago and now books about him are popping up.

Same is true with Spider Man and the X men

yes I know they had comics long before the movies but that is not my point

I mean books detailing their lives and exploits seem to appear the most after they have been in a movie.

Anyone else notice this?

It's just Marvel (or DC when relevant) capitalising on the mass public interest in heroes brought to the fore by movies that, otherwise, would be unheard of by the general public.

Let's see, Spider-Man 3 with the black costume and Venom, in the comics we have "Back in Black." I'm sure we'll see some more Silver Surfer in the comics as FF2 approaches.

To a certain extent, it does annoy me a bit but it's fair enough. It's just the way the world works these days, I mean just look at Star Wars and all of the merchandise that comes out when a film does.

At the end of the day, both DC and Marvel are companies trying to make money. Of course they have to capitalise on the publicity a movie generates.

Money makes the world go round (unfortunately). More money off a product means we get more good movies like Spider-Man 3 and the opportunity for them to make possible good movies in the future off of other characters. We as consumers have the choice of what licensed stuff we wanna buy. If it wasn't for the success of all the Star Wars movies, I'd never be able to get a Darth Tater for Lil' G-Girl.

Is there a point? Its always been that way. If they make a Captain America movie, guess who's coming back. When the Iron Man movie comes out same thing, its always been that way.

Wait until the movie studios figure out what Marvel and DC learned about raking-in-the-dough when they crafted their company crossovers!

I can see one of the studio execs showing up to a board meeting with his thirteen year old kid in tow, holding a stack of his comics, as his father asks the gathered, "How can we do all of the chromium foil/die-cut/five variations/signed-n-numbered gimmicks the comic company's do with their product but apply it to our theatrical movie?"

Sad answer: The DVD market.

Batman Vs Wolverine THE MOVIE!

You heard it here first.

It's true. It's all a marketing ploy and it works. It gives fans what they want and saturates the public with THEIR products.

I want the Venom figure, that is going to be cool!

Plus Iron Man figures other than the marvel legends will be cool.

Hey G some of that stuff looks awsome!

Anyways Gambler I know what you're saying about how movie= merchandise trust me I worked for Walt Disney World for seven months I know how it works.

I just don't understand why these charecters didn't recieve their aclaim sooner

They were great charecters long before the movies I guess

I have that desire to have the charecter recognized for its exploits in the comics not on the big screen.

Besides next thing you know the Tiny Boppers will get a hold of ghost rider or spidey and then well we all know what happends next!

THEY WILL DESTROY US ALL!

LMAO

It's already happened to Batman. I am that sad wee bunny who owns Batman lego. I'm pretty sure there's even Spidey lego out there somewhere. I know there's a barbie and ken set of Superman and Lois Lane. It scared the hell out of me. I mean, bloody hell, I thought he was meant to be man of steel not man of plastic!

Such is mass commercialisation. I remember as a kid, when it really started with Star Wars, I always wanted a Millennium Falcon like my best friend's little brother. I never had one coz I was a serious girly-girl too and got Barbies instead (even had the pink bedroom and the dream of being a ballerina, my how times change shudder), but that was what I wanted when I was about 8. Then it all got over the top and I wasn't interested in any of the hyped up toys all that much, even Barbie and Ken.
