He died twice in DoFP.

Movie universe isn't canon. Otherwise Alex Summers would be older than Scott.

at the height of his potential it should be very hard to kill iceman. it would take nova level temperatures or something that could overpower his mental control of his own body so he couldn't put himself back together

Read astonishing x-men he pretty much is unkillable. The Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four were pretty powerless next to him when he's at full power. He works the same way Sandman does where there is one tiny grain that holds his consciousness and the only way to kill him is to destroy that. The thing is though that grain could be everywhere in the whole world when he really stretchered his powers out and freezes everything.

The AoA Iceman wasn't as good at using his powers as our Iceman and didn't extend his reach long enough to become virtually unkillable.

Since he nearly ended the world in Astonishing he seems to have been more restraint and keeping himself limited to one body with a few exceptions in the middle of combat. It's why he almost died when the X-Men went to hell in Amazing X-Men because the shard of him holding his consciousness was trapped in a place with pretty much no moisture.

By physical means? No. But by unconventional means like magic, mystical powers or cosmic powers then yes.

You big silly! There's no such thing as death or dying in comics! They instead just take long naps and come back later!
