ok first off who ever says he's based out of superman either knows nothing about him or is has a giant rod in his ass-__-

.

he is OFFICALLY based off son-Goku , aka the monkey king from the popular ancient Chinese novel " journey to the west"...the novel was wrote in the 16 or 17 century(aprox).

No Caption Provided

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_to_the_West

.

.

TAORIYAMA has stated he is based on him.

Fun fact 1: gokus character design was taken from toriyams original work of a one shot manga.

anyway, goku is dragon ball followed the same features of son-goku

  • care free nature.
  • tail.
  • mystical magic pole.
  • likes to eat a lot.
  • super human abilities
No Caption Provided

when it comes to Anime the Dragon ball franchise gave the foundation for newer manga and animes .

Goku is one of the most popular anime characters world wide.

DBZ "battle of the gods" was a big hit in japan even though there wasn't a single movie for the last 10 YEARS.

.

.

.

in popularity sense he is like superman everyone knows and likes him other animes still after 20 years still metion DBZ.

example (HDXD shows his DBZ comic collection )

anyway some people take it way too far

@warlock360: He's not asking about the origins of the character's conception. We all know Goku was based off of the Monkey King, and Dragon Ball was based off of Journey to the West.

He's asking if the two characters as cultural icons are comparable. The answer is yes. Even their back stories are similar.

@jaken7: from a cultural level, the monkey king obviously is to the Asians what superman is to the westerners. Whereas superman came after Wukong and goku after superman.

Their fundamental motivations are completely opposite. Goku might be a good guy, but he fights because he enjoys it and wants to be the best.

Superman doesn't like fighting and would be happy to never have to do so again. He does because its necessary.

@superlightning123:

Sun Wukong is NOT an anime character. And he is nothing like Goku by the time of Z. Goku's inspiration from Sun Wukong more or less ends at the tail, the pole, the cloud, and his name. Sun Wukong is a mythological being, and a character from a popular chinese work of literature.

As Kyrees said there are anime and manga versions of the character, but the original Wukong is not.

I wouldn't say older..If I recall isn't Superman the "first" original superhero? Maybe that's as far as comics go. Can't remember anymore

Gambit474: how old is astro boy?

Astro Boy's been around since 1952.

And it's a fair comparison to make between Son Goku and Superman, they're very similar, pure of heart, and good role models. There's a lot of animosity on the internet between fans of both characters, but I love them both.

Lol, my bad. I've just seen so many comments of DBZ characters taking fifteen episodes to accomplish something that's it's become something of an annoyance.

Super-powered saviors from a dead planet are as far as it goes. His origin seems like a combination of the aforementioned Monkey King and Superman. But his race, his personality, his personal life, his motivations, how he fights, his transformations, the actual story past just the origin, the fact that we basically see him grow up and follow him to a greater extent than Supes, among other things all make them very different. But as far as popular "superheroes", he's basically Japan's equivalent popularity-wise. And Goku's been in many more quality movies.
