Specifically, one of the first major comic-book characters? Captain Marvel, when first written was extremely popular; as was Black Adam, the Egyptian prince.

I have often seen people refer to the 1960s as when ethnic minority characters were introduced however Black Adam doesn't seem to be recognized for it.

People tend to gravitate to heroes so that could be one reason.

Also people love to be slaves to trends and so likely focus on the 60's era when non-white characters starting popping up more

Off the top of my head, I could mention Tonto - Native American and The Lone Ranger's sidekick

I was referring to the Disney version. He's broadly an Arab, but more specifically IIRC he was Iraqi.

@frozen: and southern Iraqi and most at the central provinces are ethnically Arabs, in the north and middle Mesopotamia you'll find Assyrians, Azeris, Armenians, Kurds and several other non semitic minorities but the mid and south have been Arabic since the times of Abu Bakir. To be more exact Aladdin should be considered as "Baghdadian" because that's what the area of modern Iraq was called back then -the Caliphate of Baghdad. Iraq is the result of British dividing the middle-east with the French at the 1800's.

@battle_forum_junkie: There is a theory that he was originally intended to be Jewish. Its mostly based on the fact that El is a hebrew word for God and Kal is similar to the Hebrew word for voice so Kal-El is pretty close to voice of God.

"He's a diversity double-whammy!"

But seriously, It makes a lot of sense considering the creators backgrounds. And with so many religious parallels attached to the character already it's not much of a stretch.

@battle_forum_junkie: The Nazi's did consider him evil but that may have had just as much to do with the Jewish thing as it did with the War propaganda thing.

Zorro would be older, I think. It's hard to tell if Hispanics are still considered an ethnic minority.

@joshmightbe: I remember watching a few old cartoons involving Supes foiling several Nazi mad scientists' evil plots. Gotta love that propaganda.
