Indie Love

This thread is dedicated to the Indie/Alternative/Independent comics that surround the comics industry. In the recent comicvine podcast it was stated that some people do not know of the wonders of Indie comics and hopefully this thread can aid in this. Just post about whatever your reading and lets spread the word around.

Lately I've been reading Jeff Lemire stuff. His $1 (wow) Sweet Tooth #1 was amazingly good and had plenty of room for exploration in the world he is crating. I recently read his graphic novel, The Nobody, which was kinda like a reimagining of the Invisible Man which was amazing to read. Finally, I bought the collected edition of Essex County and other tales from Top Shelf which involves ghost stories mixed with Lemire's childhood surroundings.

Also, I've been reading back issues of Devil's Due Publishing and Image G.I. Joe tales. The Joe Casey run on America's Elite is probably my favorite Joe tale so I strongly recommend that. The IDW relaunch is really great too and I think the launch will stick around for a while.

Atomic Robo is a must have. Pure genious and fun on every page. Hopefully the distribution will become better on these books becasue they are a treat and I cannot recommend these series enough.

Killer of Demons is yet another good book from Image. Image has really been on fire lately with such works as Chew, Walking Dead (read it already), Invincible, and Astounding Wolf Man. Robert Krikman is a beast.

Fear Agent is also another enjoyable read by the great creator known as Rick Remender. Good stuff. Dark Horse is also putting out the always good Helboy stuff.

Ghostface is a comic I found in an ad of Wizard. Its pretty good and is black and white for an interesting change of pace.

Finally, Icon (creator owned works from Marvel) has put out some great things. Powers, Criminal, and Incognito.  Read 'em all.  Also Marvel has put out a type of Indie anthology that uses Indie creators who put their own unique spins on Marvel mainstays. This is called Strange Tales.  The Wonderful Wizard of Oz could also fit in the Indie category and maybe not but this is one of the best comic stories on stands.

I am also waiting for the new Pinocchio: Vampire Slayer series to come out which I think will be a fun read fromSlave Labor. Be on the lookout.

Thats what I'm reading. Post up!

The only non-mainstreem comic I read is Iredeemable and it's really good. :)

You know that I'm partial to Strange Tales, Mr. Wilson. But I also like Chew.

Pinocchio isn't out yet, but I have great hopes for it. The writer, Van Jensen, is a friend of mine.

I am currently reading Project Superpowers, highly recommend it. Its not all action, so if that's what you're looking for its probably not the book for you. If you give it half a chance I think you'll enjoy it too.

Wow.  Thats cool!  It looks really good and that is a graphic novel that I am definitely going to pick up. Strange Tales was just an amazing book for me. I love anthologies and the fact that Marvel tapped into all of these people to sow their work is amazing.  I just hope they do more!

This cover is my favorite of the week (and I posted it on the "favorite cover of the week" thread), even though the comic came out at San Diego.

It still is not at comic shops yet through Diamond, but I got a copy this weekend at DragonCon...so it is my favorite of the week. (The story inside is also amazing BTW.)

I believe the definition of indie he's going with is basically all comics outside of mainstream DC and Marvel so I'm sure even something like Marvel's Dark Tower would count

There is also Marvel's Icon line of comics.

The definition of an indie comic is one where the characters are owned by the creators and contracted ("leased") to the publisher.

Vertigo is by far my favorite publisher right now.  If no one's picked them up yet they've put out some of the best books I've ever read.  Transmetropolitan, Preacher, Lucifer, and Sandman are classic runs that everyone should at least visit to see what the big deal is.  Right now I'm really digging Northlanders, DMZ, Scalped.  It's really cool that they have so many TPB's in print you can jump right into a series without missing a beat.

Dynamite is starting to catch my attention with the Boys so is Avatar with Crossed.  Image is always good, of course.

I'm very excited to start reading Chew.  My bank account, however, is not.

If you're digging the Fantastic Four you should check out Jonathan Hickmans masterpeice "the Nightly News".  If you like Ghost Rider you should check out Jason Aaron's Vietnam psycological thriller "the Other Side" or his noir style "Scalped".

Pride of Baghdad and the Hunter were the 2 on your list that surprised me the most. The others, I expected to be good.

really? all the parker books are amazing and darwyn crooke is one of the best writers and artists in the industry, why did it surprise you?

I know Darwyn is great, but I was not familiar with the Parker books. And when I first glanced inside The Hunter GN, I thought to myself this is not some of Darwyn's best work.

OTOH as soon as I saw Niko's artwork on Pride Of Baghdad, I was overwhelmed with awe...but it didn't expect the storytelling to be as good as it was.
