Anyone else love some Independent comics? I haven't seen too much talk about them so I thought I'd start some. I'm mostly a Image guy myself but i do dabble in a lil' IDW and Darkhorse as well. Lets see, I'll start with just listing my top five independent comics.

1. TMNT

2. Skull-Kickers

3. Chew

4. Walking Dead

5. Invincible

wow there is so many more i wanna list. I'll just leave it at that for now. Lets the Independent love begin! (:

I read all independent, and I mean really independent.

Very few webcomics have actual company backing, let alone the bit two.

If we're trying to be the most indie, I think reading something self-published is more indie then reading something unpublished :P

You would have me beaten good sir, if it weren't for the fact that several webcomics are self published. :P

Ah, but have you read a self-published comic written, drawn, lettered and edited by yourself of which only one copy was printed, and that copy has only ever been seen by you? I thought so

@aztek_the_lost: No I mean, a comic writtern, drawn, lettered, and edited by the creator, with pre-ordered copies printed out, sold out, and shipped out.

Such is the case with Problem Sleuth, Homestuck, Sam and Fuzzy, Beartato, etc.

Do you generally regard anything that isn't published by Marvel or DC as "independent"?

That question isn't directed at one person, it's for anyone to answer.

#24 Posted by Bernicky (379 posts) - - Show Bio

Invincible has been the best book out there for a while

#25 Posted by DoomDoomDoom (4211 posts) - - Show Bio

@Zomboid: "generally" yes.

Thief of Thieves is good. FATALE (written by Ed Brubaker) is great!

#32 Posted by IsaiahPLG (19 posts) - - Show Bio

Thief of Thieves was pretty good, could of had better art though.

I have also heard FATALE was awesome but it was all sold out before i could try it out :/

to me it means things that are creator-owned and therefore independent of the publisher (I always assumed independent comics were comics that were independent but maybe it just means not as popular as the "other stuff" which is what some people seem to think)

so some stuff from DC and Marvel falls into the category and as a general rule, almost everything from all the publishers

I would have to agree with you aztek. True independent comics are creator owned but in the industry anything non Marvel or DC has become known as independent. Image is really the only true big independent company as it has no company owned titles or licensed material. As for the sake of this thread, we'll just say anything thats not Marvel or DC is okay.

Going to check out the Goon soon.

#40 Posted by Sammie (18 posts) - - Show Bio

I suppose it depends what you consider independent, Vertigo is part of DC isnt it? But since its not really canon/part of the universe IDK

miine are probably

1. The Walking Dead

2. Locke and Key

3. Izombie

4. Fables

5. Hack/Slash

#43 Posted by IsaiahPLG (19 posts) - - Show Bio

I'm so very interested in Usagi Yojimbo. Anyone here read that?

#44 Edited by redleigh86 (562 posts) - - Show Bio

I like The Walking Dead, Fables, Hack/Slash, 30 Days of Night, Echoes, Casanova (which was indie, but was recently licensed by Marvel), Greek Street, Preacher, Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse, Sandman, Baker Street, Hatter M: The Looking Glass War, Human Target (was indie, currently licensed by DC, I think?), Severed, Singularity 7, Y: The Last Man, if we're saying anything not directly Marvel or DC is independent. I've never really been clear on that, so it's interesting to see the discussions in here about it.

Been meaning to check out a lot of other ones mentioned in this topic - American Vampire, iZombie, Locke & Key, 100 Bullets, Chew, and The Darkness.

You mention reading a lot I've never heard of! I'll be checking those out now, thanks :)

Lots in here I hadn't heard of before actually. I'm going to check them out and see if I need to put them on my chance list.

So last week a couple new number ones from Image. The Manhattan Projects #1 and Hell Yeah #1 come out. Hell Yeah was decent, you superhero guys would like it. Manhattan Projects, was awesome! Its my favorite new series so far this year, thats for sure. Anyone else pick these up? what do you think?

Also anyone reading Lord of the Jungle by Dynamite? Its pretty dang good for a Tarzan book.

#46 Posted by IsaiahPLG (19 posts) - - Show Bio

So BKV's big Image book came out, Saga . This book was highly hyped and I don't think it lived up to it. While it was written very well, it was a bit too lovey dovey and predictable for my taste. I also don't dig Fiona Staples art all that much. That all said, I will be picking up a couple more issues at least to see what happens. Any of you guys pick this up? what do you think?
