How do you deal with comic book stories that are written terribly? Personally, I either try to avoid those stories altogether (if I heard that they were terrible) or I just read something else entirely (especially independent comics). But, if I had read a terrible story, then usually, I write fan fictions to see how the story could have gone differently if I didn't like the direction the story went to.
How do you deal with bad comic book stories?
Unless its one of my very favorite characters, I won't read it.
And even then, I'm usually only reading it as a temporary fix in the hope that it improves later.
Burn them..... Lol. But i am gonna try to sell my crappy stories. *cough new 52 justice league cough* *cough marvel now captain America cough*
When I can tell that a book is bad, I drop it as soon as possible and move on.
That's basically my reaction to reading a bad story.
I'm usually the type that needs to see it for myself because I can still enjoy mediocre stories as long as the characters are still enjoyable and as long as reading it doesn't grate my brain. However if it is really bad that I actually notice it, I just never read it again and find an all time favorite to restore my hope in the medium and/or in that particular character.
Try to just focus on the characters I like to get through it. I will probably put off reading it for a couple weeks and go back to it. Or never again. I'm still on the King Grodd Flash arc.
If the lackluster storyline is in a title that I've liked, I ride it out. It might take a turn for the better, right? If it's in a title that I'm simply trying out, I drop it. You know, it seems like a no-brainer, to drop a title when you dislike the story. But it isn't, because you'll always wonder what you've missed. It's kind of like leaving a ballgame when your team is so far behind that you're sure they'll never win ... and then missing their miraculous comeback.
I agree that it would be best to ride out the story rather than just drop it, especially if you want to see what happens in the story next. But, the problem I would have with reading such a bad story afterwards is that it could ruin my favorite characters for a long time and I have to be forced to watch my favorite character be taken in a direction that I don't want them to go in.
I have yet to read a completely terrible story. I read some bad stories but I just finish them and try to not read them again.
Besides that like everyone else said
Avoid

Marvel Now Cap is no good huh? I was somewhat interested in checking it out even though I'm not really a Rick Remender reader.

@theacidskull likes it a lot, but I found it to be long and boring, not to mention JRJRs art got worse with each issue.

The art was pretty bad in the beginning, and the story was pretty mediocre. It got a way better artist, and the story has been steadily improving, but it's hasn't become phenomenal or anything like that.
I make snarky blog posts about them.
Mostly, I avoid them. Even bad stories with my favorite characters. I don't have the dime to waste it on subpar books.

I also tend to write very negative reviews about the bad storylines I've read, but like you, I try to avoid them since I don't have the patience to deal with them.
Don't read it.
Basically this. I avoid bad storylines at all cost.

I pretend that arc doesnt happen and drop the book until I feel safe to repick up the series again
This
@wavemotioncannon: Definitely this.
Depends how bad it is. Might read it if it's so bad it's funny, it's how The Room got popular after all.
Yeah, I do come across comic books where the story is so bad that I actually like the story for being so bad!
If I buy them then don't like it, I'll sell them when I'm done reading them. Like The First Uncanny Avengers (Marvel Now) Volume and first New 52 Action Comics Volume.
@silverpool: One advantage of retail over digital...
Slightly off-topic: Why didn't you like those 1st volumes? I found them enjoyable enough.
If its part of a series I will read it, if it's a new series ill probably leave it. It's like bad tv episodes, especially sci fi, I watch dr who and star track even if a good 1/3 is terrible ;)

I really enjoyed the first 2 or 3 issues of Action Comics, but I didn't really care for the rest of the volume, and wasn't really interested in where the series seemed to be going. Uncanny X-Men wasn't terrible either, I just felt the story didn't really go anywhere. I enjoyed the first issue a lot, I liked the art of the volume, layout and, my god, the smooth hardcover is amazing. I thought the story had a lot of promise, but it was hard for me to really be engaged in reading everything after the first issue. Honestly, I didn't feel that much really happened in the story. I thought it was pretty predictable. Which is unfortunate since that was one of the Marvel Now books I was really looking forward to getting.
I'll drop that book and move on . Maybe come back if something changes; like Action Comics with Pak.
I'm the same way. I just move on if the story doesn't catch my interest. It's not like it's going to affect the titles for all eternity.
