Poll Hilted Lightsabers! (33 votes)

Yay 79%
Nay 73%

So the Star Wars Episode VII trailer released about a half hour ago (at the time of this writing), and the thing that stood out most to me was our mysterious Sith figure and his unique lightsaber. We've seen lightsabers in the style of everything from staves to whips, but I can't really recall one with a hilt like this. It makes it resemble a regular sword in some ways, but having the hilt made out of energy seems incredibly impractical, and I'm not sure if there are any practical applications in combat for it. It's kind of dumb, but I also kind of love it.

So, what are your thoughts?

I think it looks bad-mother- F'n- a$$! It gives it a "Knight/Broadsword" style/look about it. Kinda like William Wallaces giant sword from "Braveheart"

I agree - throwing this picture in there for people who don't know what the Crossguard is.

I like that they keep trying to do new things with the lightsabers and it kind of makes sense that they'd be more customized considering its an established fact that building your own lightsaber is part of both Jedi and Sith training.

Well, pretty much every sword ever made has had some sort of guard, they're put there for a reason.

Besides, it's a lightsaber, it's dangerous to the user to begin with. But if they have enough skill to wield a lightsaber I think they'd be able to keep from cutting themselves on the cross guard.

Although I would prefer the guard where made out of Cortosis or some other lightsaber-resistant material.

@battle_forum_junkie: Every sword has, sure. But the guards on those swords didn't act as an actual blade either. Making the guard lethal as well defeats the purpose.

But yeah, I'm sure that Force sensitives wouldn't really have a problem wielding it. I'm just not sure what function it serves.

Nay. I liked the comics crossguard saber more; it was more stylized. This one looks too forced. As well as the fact that it doesn't seem like it'd be any more efficient in defense than a regular saber. But I'm not going to judge it from just a small teaser.

It's there to look keeewwl!

Seriously, though, I see your point. I'm sure they'll put something in the saber fights that makes the blade-guard seem somewhat practical.

Of course, it would be much more practical if it where made out of some saber-resistant material Phrik or Cortosis, but the saber cross guard requires less explanation, I suppose.

I'm sure it also speaks to the skill of the weilder that even the hilt guards are mini-sabers. Whoever this guy is, he/she is probably one BAMF in terms of sword play/skill.

Someone said it was Revan that came back to life, and that's suppose to be a really old light saber that exhaust it's energy out of the handle.

@jedixman: Just early vis. Do we know if they've even wrapped shooting? Movie doesn't come out for another year, so I imagine the effects dept still has plenty of work to do.

Honestly, I think it could either be a great or terrible addition based on how it's implemented.

If it turns out that the energy hilt can be activated separately from the main blade, then we have a sneaky little cutter that's much less dramatic and flashy than the main blade, or a subtle feature that can cut off an opponent's hands during a blade-lock.

However, if it turns out to lack any conceivable utility, then it is just a useless aesthetic (and not even an exceptional aesthetic detail at best).

It works as a normal hilt protecting the hands from injury. For anyone that says it's impractical or dumb. Are you serious!? It's obviously not for offensive purposes. I'm sure Vader, Dooku, and Luke would approve. All need bionic digits to open their ketchup bottles now.

Given the fact that light saber blades generally repel each other and that the metal part could be a metal that is resistant to lightsabers I would say it is semi practical. Regardless, people do things purely for aesthetic reasons irl all the time for why not Sith?

Looks fine, but I'm wondering about the blade itself looking so unstable. Maybe some kind of new type of saber? Or a homemade one or something? I hope they don't all look like that

Anyone who has ever used a hilted sword in any capacity, knows that it's ridiculous. I can already see two ways that you could make your opponent cut his own fingers off.

It was horrible. Imagine if someone locks a saber with him and then start to push him a little bit and kills him with his own lightsaber due such bulls**t.

Also, the blade of the weapon seems fan made. The shape of the blade makes no sense even in SW universe.
