Hi,
I've recently started reading comics/graphic novels and was wondering what some of the best standalone graphic novels are. By this I mean ones that are not 1 volume of many for example (Watchmen, Hush, Kingdom Come, etc)
Thanks.
Here's a list of great graphic novels that work as standalone stories:
@chrrome: Welcome to Comic Vine! :)
If you're into Batman I'd highly recommend Gotham by Gaslight.
It's a "What If" type story set in 19th century Gotham where Batman has to hunt down Jack the Ripper.
Avengers Forever is one of my favorite stories. It is a twelve issue story featuring a ton of Avengers and Avengers history and is collected very nicely with foot notes on all references.
Annihilation is also a great story. One of my favorite events of all time. It is more of a sci fi epic than a super hero story. It is collected in three books. The story itself is only 6 issues but includes a bunch of mini series that really round out the story. While it is part of the Marvel cosmic canon, it reads like a self contained story and sets the status quo of the Marvel cosmic Universe for the next 5 or 6 years.
Captain America : Man out of Time. A fantastic story by Mark Waid about Steve Roger's history and a choice he has to make during the Avengers first battle with Kang.
There is also a new OGN coming out called Avengers: Endless Wartime written by Warren Ellis. I believe that it will be released in October. There are some previews up if you Google it. Sorry. I would post the link myself but am typing this on my phone.
This may be cheating, but check out the first ten issues of Kevin Smith's run on Green Hornet and Bionic Man.
They were former movie scripts, so there is no need to read on.

Hush as a character is probably one of the stupidest characters invented and that he is suppose to be a serious character just make it so much more laughable.

Comics are 51% art and 49% story. And this was Jim Lee's best work.
Also Hush is great for a newbie.

Brubakers "Criminal"
100 Bullets has several volumes.
@tupiaz: you're right. Ill subtract 100 Bullets and add Preacher and Batman: Hush
