Poll For comic fans out there! (52 votes)

Print 63%
Digital 37%

I want my books in collected format. Please help me decide if I should buy comics in digital or print format. On the average, print is $7 more expensive than digital in our country. Do you think it is worth it?

I go digital these days as I've lost my desire to (A) potentially resell anything (B) clutter my house with long boxes of comics. In my youth I amassed an impressive collection which was lost due to a series of unfortunate instances. I fell away from comics after that, but am back now that digital is so convenient and space-saving. I look forward to the eventual 12" Ipad for even better comic reading.

When I was younger I collected hardcopy comics because that is what was available and it was fun to figure out how much a collect might be worth. The problem is, if I had not lost them all, I still would never had sold them so there would just be more stuff. I am older now and I've come to the realization that I don't need more stuff in my life. I have more than enough stuff already. I have stuff I am actively trying to get rid of and yet it remains.

Kinda depends on how you will read your digital comics. If you have a big, high resolution tablet, digital is great. If the resolution is on the low end, print is better. I hate reading comics on a computer screen and trying to read them on a cell phone is even worse.

This.

It's just something about actually having them in your hands...

I've also noticed that I find myself more immersed in the comic, and that it's more enjoyable when it's physical IMO.

Print for those comics that I truly cherish.

Digital for those that are not.

Keep in mind, digital = "rental" unless you get actual PDF/CBR/CBZ version of said comic.

*Rental because you are licensing from the provider (comixology, marvel unlimited, or whatever) the ability to read their comics. You don't actually "own" them.*

When I started the discussion, what I had in mind was, "The distance of the comic store doesn't matter." But now, I realized it really is a huge factor. The nearest comic shop from our house is 2hrs travel time and in our country, the availability of comics is below normal (imo, based on videos and pictures of lcs in the US that I saw). As much as I would want to buy the "overprised" overprised comic books, it think it would be more practical for me to take the path of digital comics. And besides, I consider myself an outgoing peroson (going to school. Lol). Maybe digital comics was made for someone like me. So that's it (unless my mind would be brainwashed by some print-convincing-forces which usually happens). I would like to thank you all for enlightening me. More powers!

For those who read print trades, do you get disappointed in two page spread that the spine eats some of the art in the middle?

I'd much prefer print cause I can actually hold and feel the book and owning it to myself. I actually don't mind digital because when I'm in the long run and out travelling, I can read them on the way but the only thing that I dislike about digital is that I have to stare at a screen for an amount of time which will then hurt me eyes.

The reasons I choose digital.

  • Portability
  • Longevity
  • Convenience of cross-platform consumption
  • Superior organization and referencing
  • Usually available to read earlier

More convenient. I don't have a comic book store nearby so I just get them electronically.

@unbreakable_fs4: are you not worried that there is a possibility that the digital comic cloud would have problems (i.e. crash, etc.) or the digital comic book shop would shutdown?

I buy print, usually online because I'm not near a comic store. Although I do have Marvel Unlimited and use that frequently.

@socmalig: True but the chances of losing the purchased files is slim. Most of mine are still DRM copies unfortunately, however, the perks listed above are still mostly true.

@socmalig: Maybe slim was not the correct word to use, but rather less likely than not. I definitely see your point for physical copies. The assurance of actually owning the comic rather than basically renting it. Digital is convenient for me but based on your concerns, I'd suggest you go print and since you don't have a store close by, it's best to order them online.

Digital is annoying and uncollectable

Do you mean noncollectable in terms of the comics becoming more valuable later? If that is the case, then the bad news is that print comics are notoriously poor investments. Only a very select few ever become 'collectibles' and returns on most of these investments are extremely small.
