Favorite European Comics.
I didn't know Judge Dredd was European Now I feel stupid
Despite that, I've been reading Asterix comics ever since I was a kid and they always made me laugh, so I voted for them.
Considering there is an american series going on by IDW, I think it is a justified mistake.
Me too, Asterix and Lucky Luke were the first comics I owned :D

Yeah. I also think it has something to do with the setting. The entire premise of dystopian, cyberpunk, east-coast-america Mega City 1 sorta screams american comic.
Out of the ones you listed, The Incal by far. It's SUCH a masterpiece, as are its tie-ins. Blueberry would probably come second.
(If you can't tell by now that I have an obsession with Jean Giraud I don't know what to tell you).
I could list a thousand others that I love though.
@squalleon: Yup.
Its an american comic, on a european setting. With European I mean european made.

There is an "Other" option, if you liked some other more you could vote other and specify here :) And if it is too late you can type your favorite anyway so others can know.
@squalleon: Yeah I saw but I'm fine with voting for The Incal as it's one of my favorites anyway.
@squalleon: Ohhh, ok.
French Stuff
I like Asterix a lot
I read some of the Nikopol comics and watched the movie, it was OK
Not really that into Mobius, its a bit too "out there" for me.
Fleetway/IPC
Judge Dredd I love, one of my favourite comics.
I love Nikolai Dante.
Really like Halo Jones.
I like some ABC Warriors a lot, but find the series a little inconsistent at times.
I like Dan Abnett's Kingdom a lot.
Rogue Trooper I am not that into, but I liked a few stories (Cinnabar for instance).
Strontium Dog I liked, but mainly the earlier stuff before the resurrection tbh
Slaine I find very mixed, I liked the earlier stories but haven't liked anything for a long time
Never really got into Nemesis the Warlock, I actually own all of it but it gets mixed reactions from me.
Sinister Dexter is pretty cool, not my favourite but I'll happily read it.
Robo-Hunter, yeah, I'm luke-warm on it, it was entertaining enough.
Grant Morrison's Zenith I always saw as uber derivative of Alan Moore, but I've gotten more into it lately.
Button Man, I like it well enough.
----------------------Old Fleetway stuff----------------------
The Spider I can read and have a laugh with, those stories are the good kind of absurd
Steel Claw I honestly find to be dull, a few stories have been pretty ok though (for the 60s)
I think Kelly's Eye holds up reasonably for the time, there's some entertaining-ish stuff here.
Robot Archie, yeah, I think he's kind of likeable for such an old character, he can be kinda' quirky at times.
The Leopard From Lime Street, total knock off of Spider-Man but seems likeable so far, need to get my hands on more of these.
The Trigan Empire, I've only got a few stories in, but this seems pretty good for its age
Adam Eterno, not into it at all, poor man's Tim Kelly IMO
House of Dolmann, its OK-ish,really would've benefited from longer stories
Karl the Viking, I've only read the first saga, seems promising
Phantom Viking is kind of mediocre, I haven't totally written it off yet.
DC Thompson
Honestly I don't think I've ever liked anything from them, not Dennis the Menace, Minnie, Desperate Dan etc etc etc.
I've been reading Bananaman recently, its just not really very funny IMO
Billy the Cat never goes anywhere
King Cobra never went anywhere, and was derivative
I guess Fireball was kind of entertaining, but again, each story is done in a few pages so it never goes anywhere.
I haven't read enough General Jumbo to Comment
Black Sapper... No, just no
I guess Starhawk is OK-ish for the time
Independents/Others
I'm not that into V For Vendetta, but I respect it.
I like Marvelman, maybe not as much as everyone else but I did enjoy it
Tank Girl I've only read a handful of stories, might be a bit anarchic for me, need to read more.
Dan Dare, very good for its time, but dated now, still readable, artwork is impressive for 1950s IMO
The shorter answer....
Judge Dredd and Nikiolai Dante are my favourites.
Halo Jones, ABC Warriors, Asterix, Kingdom, and Marvelman are close on their heels.
@squalleon: Yup.

Though to be fair there's quite a bit of carry-over from Marvel UK's Captain Britain comics, and many of the most important people working on Excalibur were British, so whilst its an American comic it was mainly shaped by Brits IMO.
Don't want to sound like a douche but the choices seem like they might be a little biased LOL.
by my count there's 12 French and Belgian choices, only 1 British comic, and nothing from anywhere else!
I think V For Vendetta could've picked up some votes had it been included, maybe Miracleman as well.
-------------------------------------------
Is Dennis the Menace completely unknown outside of the UK? I'd say he's much more popular here than Judge Dredd (unfortunately).
He's been the star of multiple Cartoon series' over the years.

These were the ones that came to me from the top of my head. Hell I even forgot Corto Maltese. And thats why there is an "OTHER" option. Which I have encouraged viners to vote for instead of settling with one of the choices above and comment on their favorite so others can see the comics they love. If there is a strong "OTHER" percentage it is sure that people will look down on the comment section to see what people love. And if you see the ones that people don't consider their favorites have 0% so the options doesn't really matter. This could just as well be a common thread. The whole point of this thread was for the viners that haven't read European comics or want to or want to read more to learn more and expand our reading list.
Thats why I appreciate your first comment, which lists comics I haven't even heard of.
I used to read a few Asterix comics when I was younger. They were fun and entertaining comics and stories even if their historical accuracy wasn't always spot on. They were also used for French lessons in my schools so they have educational value too. That's a positive benefit for the Asterix comics IMO. But I still need to read V for Vendetta, I doubt the film can capture Moore's original story.
True, but there are a lot of Euro comics that have been reprinted in the US by US companies (such as Dark Horse of IDW) that people may think are US comics. Having them in the choices section would've given people access to more examples.

Other stuff -
I believe the Smurfs are from comics, they're quite popular around the world.
There's also the Moomins from Finland, which were famous in the UK for their comics (and later cartoon) but I think that actually started out in books. I've read some of those comics, they're quite likeable and easy to read.
Yeah, they started as books, though soon after they got a comic strip by the same creator and ran concurrently.

(Judge Dredd is European? Never would've guessed.)
Anglo. European geographically but when it comes to culture, some Brits don't want to be associate as European.

Ah, I see. Thank you.

They originate from comics but they are best known from the TV series.
Also if Marshal Law counts then that's obviously one of my favourites, added to Dredd and Dante.
Marshal Law was written and drawn by Brits, he was originally published by Marvel, but was creator owned, so his 3rd, and 4th stories were able to be published by a British company (Apocalypse), after that he made the rounds (Dark Horse, Image etc etc).
So essentially the creative team has always been British, but the publisher has been American half the time, British the other half.
I've been reading Charlie's War recently, definitely one of the best comics of its time IMO
Its one of Pat Mills' (Slaine, ABC Warriors) earlier comics, and one of his more acclaimed
Haven't read any of these.
Steel Claw I honestly find to be dull, a few stories have been pretty ok though (for the 60s)
I take this back about The Steel Claw, some later stories are respectable for the time.
Black Sapper is not that bad, sure its filled with casual racism but it does at least have a plot and things move forward and resolve (which seems to be fairly rare for most DC Thompson comics to be honest, most of which are done-in-one 4 page shorts).
A few Bananaman stories have garnered a smile from me now, I've yet to laugh out loud though but its OK.
--------------------------------------------
I also forgot to mention Sonic the Comic before, these stories are well suited for kids, they move quickly, are fairly straighforward (tend to be a bit over-explanatory), but have a lot of action and twists and turns with the characters, the artwork is often very nice too (when done by the two major artists, some of the other artists are kind of amateurish). Decap Attack is also legitimately funny at times.
Nick Jolly I actually kind of like the character and find him to be an idea with promise, but DC Thompson take him nowhere as usual. Still the character manages to kind of entertain during his short done-in-one stories and doesn't outstay his welcome, I like the artist as well, pretty sure I recognise his work in a lot of early Judge Dredd stories.
@squalleon: Quite a good poll here if you're still interested in this stuff, I've been using it to find recommendations lately.
