Does product placement in movies bother you?

Personally it never actually bothers me, especially in special effects heavy movies where the product placement was probably needed to help fund the film. But I've heard a lot of people complaining about it before, so I thought I'd make a poll for it.

it does bother me... but not for any other reason without this...

If I make a movie, and the characters are drinking pepsi throughout, but I did not clear it with Pepsi... they sue me for millions.... if I set it up with them to have Pepsi displayed promonantly in the movie... They draft me a check...this kind of double standard pisses me off. if they are willing to pay producers to use their products in a movie, than they should relinquish their rights to sue over seeing their products in movies.

ohh how blatant doesn't matter... like receses in ET, than it was novel and new, but once the lawsuits started happening, I got fed up.

I think it represents a sense of normality kind of.

If I saw Tony Stark in Avengers 2 drinking a Coke, i'd be like "Hey, he's drinking a brand that normal people drink"

It really depends.

Sometimes you dont notice it and other times it is way to obvious.

You have a point there, but it's their product and they have complete control of it. If they want to sue for free advertising it's technically their right no matter how stupid.

I completely agree with this.

Not usually. There are times when it can get to be a bit ridiculous, but I don't mind things like the unscathed Sears logo in Man of Steel, if anything it adds a sense of realism.

Do you think it will ever come to the point where they stop the movie to do a commercial of have a character stop in the middle of a movie to do a commercial scene? I think if this ever happened I would just stop going to the movies entirely.

I don't see anything wrong with it. It's a way to increase budget without cutting to commercials. Also, I didn't even notice it in Man of Steel. I mean, it's not like they stopped fighting and raised a huge banner with a brand on it.

Also, our world is full of ads. It doesn't really pop out if I see it in a movie.

Eh. It'd bother me more to see all kinds of fake brands. Yes, there's a Sears in Smallville. There probably also would be one in a real town. What's so strange about that? Unless the movie starts really advertising (ie. if somebody drinking a Cola starts monologing(?) about how great the taste is), then I'll just see it as a regular, normal world, which is actually more believable than if they didn't use product placement.

Doesn't really bother me at all...unless it gets to a point where it's ridiculous.

Personally, I have purchased a product for the first time after watching a movie. Living outside the US, I grew up without some of the brands that many use.

Nope. Unless the characters start singing the praises of a particular product, I tend to not notice product placement.

And what was so bad about there being an Ihop and a Sears in MoS? Realisticly, Smallville would have big box stores and chain restaurants. Both Marvel and DC have published promotional comics that were much much more overt than anything in any movie. (Mastercraft tools saving the JLA watchtower, for one)
