Does a character's popularity affect if you like them or not?

#1 Posted by Jack Donaghy (347 posts) - 5 months, 28 days ago - Show Bio

Because it seems that the most hated characters on this site are all the most popular characters among non comic reading fans. People like Batman, Superman, Wolverine, Storm, the Hulk just to name a few have the most haters here and on other comic book sites, I'm curious to know if the people who hate them do it because they're popular or because they honestly don't like the character's personality. There are 4 types of people when it comes to entertainment: the 1st 2 are commonly known as hipsters 1. People who hate things mainly because they're popular. 2. People who like things mainly because they're unpopular, so they can feel special about liking something underground. 3. People who like things just because they are popular, like people who've never watched a second of baseball but wear Yankees caps just because they're a famous and popular team. and 4. People who refuse to like things just because they're unpopular.

Would you say you fit into any of those categories? Think of all the characters you like and dislike, do you like/dislike any of them just because they're popular/unpopular?

im a big wolverine fan and i also like indie comics like invincible , the darkness, etc , popularity means squat if the character is great who cares if it becomes a movie or a million fanboys are seething when their character is downplayed or said to suck (Thor. lol)

I hate haters, but alas: they must proceed to hate. There's a "Why I hate Batman" thread, like really? If your arguement is "all the fanboys go on and on about how great (fictional character) is", you need to reevaluate life

Not at all.

My favorite character happens to be the most well known fictional character in the world, yet I like him for other reasons than popularity.

Some of my other favorite characters are ones that people have never heard of before.

It's not about popularity, but the fans. Yes, the fans can make me dislike a character.

Yeah I found that thread odd too, most haters don't seem to hate characters for legit reasons, they see that they have a lot of fans and that makes them hate them for some reason. Plus it's really weak imo to hate someone who doesn't even exist.

This has been done for other characters as well. Hate threads are an abomination.

A character overexposed or given to much sway in a universe can affect my liking of them. I am not going to sit here and act that Wolverine being in 8 titles doesn't make be dislike him more then I already did, but I never liked Wolverine so it is more an addition to my dislike.

I feel you. Its frustrating in Hulk vs threads when a bunch of people just post "Hulk smashes! "Hulk is strongest there is" or make some lame Hulk-based joke. I wallow in a sadistic pleasure when he loses the battle. Oddly, haters made me like Thor. Except when BigCimmerian or majestic99 talk about him. Ugh. I'm still indifferent to Storm regardless of her fans and haters.

Really though, no one is just going to say they hate a character because they're popular

Hating a character simply because they're popular doesn't make sense - unless they're popularity is undeserving in your eyes, which again kinda goes back to the fans a bit.

Oh, no, I'm not saying I hate the Hulk. Its just annoying when decent threads get momentarily derailed with "Hulk gets angrier because his rage is limitless and stomps". So yes, its that type of fan that irritates me. Not the character. The bolded part was a joke.

I know. But, I have to be honest: I kind have cheer a little in my head when a character with a lot of fanboys have a bad showing in a comic.

@Jack Donaghy: Most of us want to be hipsters - whether we admit it or not. People who say they aren't affected are most likely the real sheep, because they're not self aware enough to admit that others make a difference on how they perceive their surroundings.

And by the way, Batman is cool.

I like what I like, and dislike what I dislike.

It can be annoying if everyone loves a character I dont like, but thats never the reason I dislike a character in the first place.

#22 Posted by Rabbitearsblog (3968 posts) - 5 months, 27 days ago - Show Bio

No.  It doesn't matter to me if the character is popular or not, as long as the character has a good personality and is being written well.

There's a fifth category the objective people who don't base whether or not they like a character on their popularity, but instead base it on how a character is written and illustrated. I fall into that category. For example, why does everyone hate Hal Jordan? I really don't get that.

I agree with this. Although I think it applies to every category @Jack Donaghy: listed above, not just hipsters. If you hate a character because of popularity or like them, you probably do it subconsciously. For example, how many fans of a certain character are afraid to say they like said character because said character is unpopular or vice versa.

Not simply because it's popular no but when a character does become popular there is consequences that do effect my opinion. Like with Wolverine. Not only is he over exposed in comic books but they change the character to be everything. So instead of a character who is an anti-hero who is uncomfortable around people we get a character who is an anti-hero and a hero who runs a school for kids.

@Dernman: Completely agree with what you said about Wolverine.

Yes and no. My favorite characters tend to not be A-Listers.

However, when a character gets so popular, the stories they are in appear to be the writer's personal fanfics, I get annoyed.
