Trek and other sci fi -- an essential nutrient like calcium or oxygen. Does a body good.

Fantasy is tasty, but not necessary for survival.

Both equally. Just get on different kicks at different times. Now it's sci-fi. Just re-read all the ultimate classics.

Fantasy for me. Something about the world of elves, dwarves, and dragons have always appealed to me. Sci-Fi is nice but it has to be explained in some way for it to makes sense. Fantasy is just "is". No brain teaser to figure it out.

Sci-Fi, there's logic to it, rules. Magic can just make up any old random crap, hammer's you have to have a certain hairdo to lift, etc. Gag me out the door. That said some fantasy does play ball. The Highlander show had rules they followed. The movies were a horrible hodge-podge, but the show kept it together pretty well. So I'll branch out if the particular fantasy universe follows some kind of physics of it's own choosing.

Fantasy.

I prefer my fiction/fantasy to be among the impossible and seeing how other people create a different take on an established fiction, it gives me both that sense of new and at the same time maintains familiarity. Now science fantasy is fun and all but it's somewhat rare for the genre itself to used established fictions and just make there own, It's not a bad thing just that I prefer that familiarity. Science Fiction on the other hand normally tries to ground itself in an area of believable world building often times using something relevant to what issues we have now and the now doesn't interest me as much as the types of exaggerated fiction topics, I mean yeah deep down we could find similarities between stories on fantasy but the setting does enough to create that distance.

SF hands down. I can't really get into fantasy....magic and knights aren't really my thing. I've never even seen LoTR or GoT, and I can't really get into books like Thor or WW.

Same for me as well. I do prefer Lord of the Rings over Star Wars but I have a lot of love for the sci fi genre too. Both in terms of films and books.

I would consider SW and ST science fantasy due to the force and people like Q.

Also, robots are not just in science fiction.

Sci fi... it helps me think of things that could be possible in the future and gives me ideas on how to make inventions....

Both can be good if done right..and both can be boring if done right. I will come out and say I don't like Star Trek (the series) I found it boring, just a bunch of guys standing around philosophizing about the universe, give me some action! Give me a laser gun battle or something! Likewise, I found Lord of the Rings to be equally boring, walking, walking, ogre battle, walking, walking, another battle, walking, walking, drop ring in volcano...walk back.

However, both genres also have great instalements, I love Star Wars and Game of Thrones. But if I was forced to choose between the two, I'd pick Sci Fi, you have more options.

Fantasy so much more. To me it just makes for better story when you can just tell science to suck it.

Lol, it seems like many people conflict one another, the Fantasy people don't like science bogging down potential plots while Sci-Fi people like having rules to fall back on to avoid chaos.

not exactly to me. Good storytelling needs internal logic that is consistent, even if that is insane looney toons logic. Otherwise the plot breaks down. The reason that I prefer fantasy is that when you have supernatural forces, it enhances my sense of escapism as in real life I am an intensely scientific and rational person. It's not the bogging down of the plot hooks, it's the type of plot hooks the sci-fi world mechanics entails that are less interesting to me most of the time. If you have a world where the internal rules intergrate forces that make the rules of physics fly out the window at the right times, then you really get the sense of being in another world.
